  • Passanger window needs adjustment

I have a red 03' that I purchased this spring. (12,300 miles) It had a "small" air/water leak on the passangers window with the hardtop on. Took the hardtop off and "OH NO", there is a gap towards the rear/top of the pass window. Is there an adjustment for this, and if there is, what needs to be don and should I attack it?

Would really like some help before I result too taking it to my dealer.

Scriv, this may not help, but I suggest a window calibration per the owners manual, before pursuing anything costly or intrusive - can't hurt.

Run the window all the way down and continue holding the down button for a full three seconds after it reaches the bottom. Then immediately run the window all the way up and continue holding the up button for three seconds after it reaches the top. That is how to recalibrate the window drop feature. You can do both driver and passenger windows simultaneously.

Thanks guys! Tried to set the window last night with no luck. Now that I think about I am wondering if I should do it with the door open? Did I do it wrong? Your help is great! Buy the way I also have an 03' Merc Murader for sale if you know of anyone. It's Blk / Blk with 80K miles.

        Thanks, Terry

The door needs to be closed to calibrate the windows, I think. I have only done it that way. Since the point is to calibrate the upper and lower limits so they fit tightly, it only follows that it would work with the doors closed.

At least I have never tried it with the doors open.

Well guys, the adjustment did help out! (doors closed) Took it thru the first "brushless" car wash this morning and it leaked kinda bad. The last convertable I had was a 57' Plymouth, red w/blk & wht int. Can anyone say "CHRISTINE". I remember it leaking like a sprinkler. Should the top leak much on the Bird?

              Hi there,

Our 2003 bird has been driven out in all kinds of heavy rain, it's been parked outside work through huge thunderstorms and honestly, I was expecting some leakage but it was bone dry, no problems.

The only annoying thing is when you open the door, the water on the roof tends to drain right onto the drivers seat. This just seems like a design flaw but I don't know what they could do to stop that happening.

              Good luck, Gordon.

Mine has never leaked and it is my daily driver. I would expect leaks in a high-pressure car wash...

Daktari, I do find that rather annoying! Right when you open the door when it's raining you get the splash on the arm rest next to the window up/down buttons then the water goes to the seat! I wish there was some kind of channel around the top front winshield seal...

                    Re: Passanger window needs adjustment

If you go back probably around 30 years, most cars did have a channel around the outside edge of the roof, don't know about soft tops though. Apparently when computers got involved in the aerodynamics of car design, it was found that these channels created a lot of drag and whistle sounds so off they went. It happens when you roll the window down too. Straight off the roof right into your lap. Had to go into work one morning with a big damp patch on my pants, right in that area where you don't need to be having a damp patch!

I have a habit of winding the window down when it's been stood in the rain. This is obviously to wipe the rain off to make it easier to see through. Don't do it in this T-bird, soft top or hard top.

Funny but annoying at the same time, Gordon....

I spent some time Sun looking at the leak areas and found that the rubber molding fits funny on the pass side. In compairing it to the drivers side it seems to not fit correctly. Anyone heard of this problem?

There is a 12 page TSB or SSM put out on roof leaks that Joe Varey posted in the Tech Forum some time ago. It explains this and many other causes of leaks.

I am not sure it will post as a link, but here is the link: http://www.thunderbirdnest.com/forum...ead.php?t=6204

It is very exhaustive and I bet it addresses your problem.

I had the same problem on the passenger side and it wound up being a broken cable that lifts the soft top up
The tention on the drivers side was pulling on the passenger side and making the top sit slightly crooked
                          Just a thought
