Re: Engine runs rough - vibration at idle

My Check engine light was flashing today in the middle of an 80 one way trip, then engine felt like it was missing. Got to my meeting hoping the cooling off would help, what do I know! Engine light stayed on all the way home. I thought maybe bad gas I got yesterday, so I stopped today, got fuel additive and put in higher octane. I was away this weekend, put 350 miles on it,then another 170 today, thought I ran too fast for too long, again, what do i know? Should I take it in to dealer? Bought it used with short warranty which is overcalled them and they said the ignition coil is covered for 150,000 miles due to known problem?? According to service record this was changed once already and some gasket was changed also.

Yes take it in, the warranty for the COPs is good untill 100,000 miles or 10 years.

[quote=sauernote;353392]I took the car to the dealer this morning. (The light was not flashing.) They are replacing all 8 COPs. This is a good thing as my $100 deductible will only be paid once. Glad I put the extra 4 years on the warranty.

You should not have had to pay the deductible if Ford is covering this problem with an extended warranty??

The problem is my car is a 2002 and is not covered by Ford's extended warranty on COPs.

Re: Engine runs rough - vibration at idle

              Hi,
I traded my '02 T-bird away a few years ago and lost touch with this website, so pardon me for asking for this question if it's common knowledge to everybody else. Does Ford's 100K mile coverage of T-bird coils cover second and third owners. or just the original buyer? Does the extended warranty cover Lincolns as well? I've replaced two on my LS, but I didn't go back to the dealer since I bought it used anyway. Hopefully I'll be selling the LS tomorrow and back in the market for a T-bird.
              Thanks

                Trent,
first, the 100K mile coverage is only on the coils BUT doesn't include the 2002 model year. It does include the 03 to 05
2nd, it is extended to 2nd and 3rd owners but not sure how that works.
I think the paperwork covers the LS of the same years (not the 02s) but will have to look at the paperwork again.

update - it does include the Lincoln LS of the same years - 02 to 05s

Thanks for the information. I've been casually shopping for an 03 or 04 with less than 50K miles, but I can't do anything until I sell my LS anyway. It's good to know that Ford is willing to take some responsibilty for the coil problem. I wonder why they didn't include '02 model?

Yeah we are wondering the same thing... I am the second owner of the T-Bird I have, and I've had no problems getting the extended warranty coverage on the COPs. However, they will not look in-depth to the core problem at hand (Leaky wiper seal, leaky cowl causing water to pour on the back of the COP covers). My 100,000 warranty is out as I now have 100,900 miles on my baby...

Had the car in the shop today, they replaced # 1,3, & 4, right side valve cover casker and 2 coil boots, and plugs, NO CHARGE P.S.- I am the third owner. I bought the car 1hr. away from me and they wanted me to come there, didn't think so! I would have really recked the car! Took it two miles away and no problem with service!

Re: Engine runs rough - vibration at idle

I sold my LS this afternoon and am off to look at a 17,000 mile '03 T-bird tomorrow. As I wrote earlier, I had to replace two coils on my '04 V6 LS. Is there anybody here with over 25-30,000 miles on their T-bird who hasn't had a coil problem? This car will be my primary transportation and I'm starting to wonder if my T-bird fixation is going to cause more trouble than it's worth.
                        Thanks

I have 57,000 miles on my 2002 and had all 8 replaced yesterday. This was the first time in over 7 years of ownership.

No problems so far, have always run name brand premium fuel and been kept inside (but not parked for the winter)

We've got a Thunderbird Blue '02 in the garage with 52,000 and no problems yet. (knocking on wood as I type this)
