Re: Droning sound from rear end.

Mine is at dealership today to have the left rear wheel bearing replaced. Can pick it up tomorrow. The wining sound should be gone then.

Re: Droning sound from rear end.

      Hi there,

Well, after seeing these responses, I'll just keep driving for a while and see if it seems to get worse. If it seems to stay constant, then I'll probably live with it for a while. It's mainly noticable on a real smooth surface but apart from that it disapears into the engine sound and wind noise.

      Thanks for the info, Gordon.

Re: Droning sound from rear end.

        Hi there,

Sorry to make this come to the top but I thought I'd just post the latest on the drone from the back end of the car.

Well, it didn't seem to be getting worse so I decided to leave it until the next service. Just had the car serviced and after the mechanic had driven the car his opinion was that the noise was just ordinairy road noise being amplified by the well where the soft top would normally be stored. When the soft top is up, this tends to act like a big echo chamber. I can live with that.

Also, because of a $29 voucher that they gave me last time, the whole service including fluid checks, oil and filter change and tire rotation came to just $52.00. Pretty good for a Ford dealership.

My tires have now entered the 'yellow' stage. This means they are ok for now but should be replaced in the near future, probably the next service. They are the original Michelin Pilots and will have done 36,500 miles and are approx. 7 years old.

I'm happy right now, I thought I may have had a more serious problem there.

Re: Droning sound from rear end.

Each noise can be from a different cause, but the most common thing we find at the dealership (on all Cars, we don't service many 'Birds, but they fit in as well) is tire wear due to alignement. Cupped tires acount for the majority of our "Bearing" noises. run your had back and forth on the tread and see if you feel any bumps (cupping), make sure and do this for the whole width of the tire, usually it seems to be the inside edge that cups. If it is some new tires and an alignment will most likely fix your noise.

FIRST THUNDERBIRD HAD TO HAVE THE TWO REAR WHEEL BEARINGS REPLACED. SEEMED LIKE A DIFFERENT CAR AFTER THAT. WHEN CAR WAS ON A LIFT, SPINNING THE WHEELS PRODUCED THE DRONE.

Could also be a needle bearing in the rear diff. That happened to me (thankfully under warranty at the time).

Re: Droning sound from rear end.

Many things produce noise from rear of vehicle, and some are normal. I agree with most comments here but am concerned about bearing failure. That is very uncommon in today's cars. Any numbers out there on frequency of this in a T-Bird? Most bearings I have seen in last 10-20 years have been sealed units.
