  • Help! Yellow Bird May Be Ill

We have an 02 Bird in Inspiration Yellow which is my wife's dream car. Have not had a bit of trouble with it, changed oil regularly, no bad COPS, etc. Got a call from as she was leaving work and she says that when starting the car a "great big puff of blue smoke" came out of the tailpipe. Had this happen last week also. Car runs smooth, good acceleration, idle and all that. Any ideas? Am now a little afraid of what's happening under the hood. BTW, no warning lights, etc. are showing on the dash. Thanks to everyone in advance with any ideas.

Sounds like it may be burning gas and/or oil, I would say bad gas would be the number one cause then dirty fuel injectors or bad catalytic converters (Very unlikely it's bad catalytic converters). How dark is the blue smoke? If it's really dark blue smoke then that means oil is entering the cylinder(s) and is burning with the gas. If that happens enough it will foul a spark plug. Causes for that would be a leaky seal.

Had that happen once about 3 years ago, I did nothing and it never happened again.

There may be a TSB on this. As I rememeber, it seldom does happen but it was some sort of engine management thing that was not serious and could be fixed with a computer update. It was not a sign of a mechanical problem like leaking valve seals, bad rings, etc. See above post by John Bakos - probably nothing to worry about.

Same here in my Inspiration Yellow about 5 years ago. Happened once and then never again. Strange.

I've seen it once or twice. Most recently was the next start up after a quick start & kill of the engine to move from the driveway into the garage. I figured it was excessive residual gas that didn't adequately burn the previous time.

This can happen if your gas cap was not tight. It happened to me when I started the car with the gas cap off.
