Re: Airbag - "Too Much Resistance"

....taking into account the likelihood, historically, of and about these vehicles, I'd bet it's the clock spring...When the airbag icon comes on how many options does it provide in terms of whats wrong?

Thanks for the advice. I am terrified of taking on the task on my own! I guess what I am so confused about is why does my mechanic think it's not the clockspring and why doesn't he try to repair it if it was something else?
I don't want to spend $450 (what I was quoted for at the dealership for replacing the clockspring) if that is not the issue.
When I had to pull the airbag module in order to replace my stereo and cruise control button assemblies, I too was terribly apprehensive. However, it was a 1 nut (battery), 2 bolt (module mount) operation to remove the airbag module and reach the switches. Perhaps your mechanic thinks the proper operation of your horn and whatever else is in the circuit eliminates the clock spring as the problem. Replacing an airbag module is very expensive. I would examine the electrical connection first. It should not cost much to have a mechanic verify that power is available to the airbag and it's plug is okay.

I had the same issue. Air bag warning light came on and stayed on. Took it to a Lincoln/Mercury dealer for them to check out. Problem was a bad wire connector under the driver's seat.

Re: Airbag - "Too Much Resistance"

My airbag light has been flickering on and off for several months. My Ford dealer ran the tests, and diagnosed it as "being a bad clockspring." Estimate for replacement was $300 (which sounds good compared to some of the other posts i've read.) I said I'd think about it...

But, how reliable is that diagnosis? Could it still possibly be a dirty contact?

Yes, it could. I have the same problem. On some days it's better than others. Ford said my clockspring was bad too (They did NOT disassemble the unit however). I took it to a local wrencher and he actually took it apart. The clockspring was fine. The "Too Much Resistance" sounds logical to me. I've had a look-see at those wires, they are not very good wires...

Mine also turned out to be a connector problem with the driver's seat.

DavidA, was the connector problem under the seat? Or in the seat?

Tick, Tock replace the clock spring. but find an independant to do it. the part is about $125, labor should be $100. If my dealer would do it for under $300 I'd say - do it.
