  • An Ode to COPS

Yesterday I lost yet another coil pack. Goes into the dealer tomorrow for replacement as it seems replacements are in heavy demand right now and he has to order new ones in.

I decided to commemorate this with a short poem.

    Bronzebird

    Ode to COPS

Oh brave coil pack ready to light
the plug below you so gas will ignite
To start the crank turning and unleash that power
To propel my T-Bird many miles in an hour
It’s a tasty dish, but it sometimes goes sour.

Those coil packs are fragile things
When things go right, my engine sings.
But when the damn things decide to fail
Oh listen Lord, you can hear me wail
Why do they make these things so darn frail?

All was fine until one day in May
When the engine sputtered and spoiled my day.
No check engine light glowed but I knew it was a COP.
Quickly to the dealer as the tachometer begins to hop
For Ford engineering, this is a major flop!

One coil pack replaced and seven to go
The warranty’s extended so we saved some dough
But there’s another pack that’s sure to die
At some inappropriate time…anxiety is high
Oh damn, it sputtered again, I think I could cry.

So it’s back to the dealer for yet another new coil
As I sit in the waiting room my blood begins to boil
Is it excessive heat or too much moisture, I wish I knew
It seems the service folks don’t have much of a clue
Oh, what is a Thunderbird lover to do?

After the third new COP we’re back on the road
When the engine wheezes and hops like a toad.
Yep, it’s another coil pack biting the dust
Its hard to bear but bear it we must
If, for these cars we continue to lust.

WOW! I enjoyed your ode so much, I had Judy pause her program so I could read it to her. Well done!

I still think, especially once a second one goes, it's time to replace ALL of them. Why keep going back when you know it's only amatter of time?

It's almost the same labor cost to change them all. Bite the bullit!

Got to agree with that. One went on the 04. changed them all. The 02 has had symptoms, but knock on wood, none yet. Techron through a couple of tanks of premium, them changed out the gas filter. And all hesitation has gone away.

Good friend with an 02, has had nothing but misery of late with the COP's. Now Power steering pump is leaking. They love the car, but are at about wits end with it.

Well done! Captures the emotion for sure!

I'm trying my best right now to NOT think about that second coil that's almost guaranteed to fail at some point.
              I have a guitar......played for many years.
If I do become as disgusted with this as you clearly were when motivated to write the potential lyrics.......maybe I'll come up with music to compliment it.
              Will it be any good?
Hey, can't be any worse than the problem itself!

Haven't had the problem - yet! But Steve, it's gotta be the blues.

Yeah, I'm thinking a simple 12 bar thing ought to cover it.
