  • Computer (ignition) Update

Made an appointment today for service at the local Ford dealer tomorrow, Wednesday. They do the computer update but it comes with a warning: Once done, it cannot be undone. Mine is an 02 and has never had any updates before concerning the engine, ignition etc. My bird runs excellent, still snaps me back if I step on it from a standstill. So, should I go thru with it? Will MPG suffer? Will smooth running suffer? Will response to accelerator improve? How Much? Anything else I haven't thought of?

Bob, when I had my '03 updated the most noticable difference was smoother shifting.

Bob, My 02 has never had this done and unless I would have a problem I'll never have it done. Runs fine for me the way it is.

        Re: Computer (ignition) Update

Bob, I purchased a SCT Xcalibrator 2 back in 2005. One for each car.

I downloaded the original settings and had 3 'tunes' one for fuel economy to use regular gas ( never used it) one for max performance 94 octane ( ran with it ) better tighter shifts and I was able to adjust when shifts happened etc without a laptop through the hand held unit. Really like it.
I would assume if you downloaded the 'original tune into it, then had the dealer download his latest and you didn't like it you could download the original back.

Talk to the guys at SCT.

          Re: Computer (ignition) Update

Bob, I had mine updated a little over a year ago. It seems like the accelerator is awful touchy now and it is difficult for a smooth start. Just a little step on the gas and away we go (too fast). Gas mileage has suffered as well. It seems like car idles too fast. I don't like it and wish I could go back to what it was.

In defense of the car, I have not had anyone from my dealership check it out, so it may be another problem of some sort. Just turned 20k miles.

          Just my opinion.

Just back from the dealership. Lots of interesting stuff about the auto industry talked about over the pickel barrel. Here's just a few things I thought interesting. The local dealer cannot get enough cars because Ford closed more plants than necessary. New car dealers are furious and frustrated at the way things went with Chrysler and apparently GM. Ford dealers are being leaned on by Ford Motor Co who is enjoying their current status at the top of the heap. The 2010 Shelby 500 has more horsepower than the 2009 Shelby KR making those dealers with KR's doing anything to get rid of their already overpriced cars. Oh yes, did I tell you that I did not get the ignition update. Thanks Bruce, Spence and David. Tony, I long ago learned the meaning of assume!!! But thanks also for your input. I love my Bird the way she is.

Just remember this famous quote from a wise farmer: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
