None: Don't worry about it - If it happens it happens.

I just make an effort to keep my engine bay DRY and that has worked thus far.

        Re: COPs......how many?

This thread has revealed more than I expected really.

        To all who answered thanks.

The problem is really not much of a problem at all. It's easily fixed so to anyone suggesting it's nothing to get worried about......you may be right.

It really would take a catastrophic failure of more than one to strand you.

For me this is more of the "car guy" dilemma.

The thought of being 100 miles or more from home for more than a day at a time......with the car running less than 100%.........that would just tick me off no end.

I'd have to fix it at the time not a few days and a few hundred miles later.

......while some here can't imagine that thought.......there are also a few who do.

Guess it's still true.......takes all kinds.

Then again maybe we're just split on this one along the line between those who work on their own cars vs those who don't want to.

For what it's worth.......on trips away from home I envision bringing 4 along. They take up no room what-so-ever and I figure just having 'em with me puts "Murphy" and his law at bay. Since diagnosis is the big problem when no light shows on the dash.......4 changed out at a time gives me a 50/50 shot at a perfect running car without much effort......and at worst I guess wrong and have to go for the other side on a second attempt.

          Re: COPs......how many?

I had three of my COPS replaced at the same time recently. Because of the vanishing FOMOCO dealers in Miami, I drove to work one day and then well over a hundred miles with all three COPS misfiring badly to get them replaced at a dealer I trusted. No problem (except when accelerating), so it would take more than 3 or 4 failing at the same time to actually disable the car.

It just misses under load but if you get on the expressway on cruise control it feels perfectly normal and I suspect you could go for days without any adverse effects. If you stop for personal reasons you really feel it while accelerating, but at a steady speed it isn't even noticeable.

For me carrying any spare coils would be silly, but if that is your thing, go for it. It is certainly not necessary, in my opinion.

            Yeah, and there it is.

With one car that's covered under the extended warranty and another that isn't.........I'm split on the idea of allowing the dealer anywhere near the car for this problem anyway.

FAT CHANCE I'd allow 'em to do it at a recently quoted $110 per coil and the inflated shop rates for labor and diagnosis!

Since I'm gonna do it anyway.......I see no reason to drive even for the shortest time with the car missing and stumbling. That would drive me CRAZY...........a car that doesn't run right is nothing but a frustration I won't live with.

I'm with MerlotBlue. I had 3 of my COPs go out at 99,992 miles. I said F*** the extended warranty since I was out in Jasper, TX on a Sunday. Just went to an O'Reilys Auto Parts Store and bought 8 BWD COPs with a lifetime warranty. A car that doesn't run right drives me nuts. I'm a PC tech, and a PC that doesn't run right also drives me nuts. It's got to be fixed, now in my mind. :)

Thanks for your very nice and polilte answer to my question. Someone else on the Forum reprimanded me for asking a stupid question. I just joined TBN yesterday and this is my first experience with blogging.

Joyce, there are no stupid questions when it comes to our cars.

For those roadside repairmen/women who carry cops in the trunk, if one goes while traveling and you stop to fix it, how can you tell which one to fix?

Personally, I can't. I carry them in case I'm at a dealer who cannot get them quickly. I want to be sure I can get it fixed and be back on the road in a reasonable amount of time. Maybe later I will buy a device that reads which cylinder but for now the pro's do it.

I carry a code reader in the car. If I get no code, I pull the COP and put it back and drive a little bit. Most of the time this will trigger a code.

I and many other have asked the same question before we figured out how to use the seach feature. BTW, Borla's are a high performance exhaust system that adds some VRRROM to the ride! And PM is 'private message'. Now what about Harry Potter???
