  • 2002 Air conditioning

Hi. 2002 with 15,000 miles. A/C blew hot air at 10,000 so added 1 lb of refrigerant. Now only the driver's side blows cooled air and it's not very cold. The passenger side blows non-cooled air. What'ssup??/

Your system probably needs to be "burped", search old threads here, there's lots of discussion on this.

        Re: 2002 Air conditioning

Mine is doing the same thing and I'm bringing it into Lincoln-Mercury tomorrow (I only have 20,000 "Garage Queen" miles on it). While I've read the thread on "burping" the coolant (expelling air in the cooling system) I doubt that this is actually our problem. More likely is a set of valves near the radiator that send engine coolant (name escapes me now) to the heater core may be stuck open or something (sending "hot" engine coolant to the core); at least I'm hoping it's this and not a "stuck" or broken actuator blending door in the dashboard. I've read that if the blender door is defective they need to remove the dashboard to get at it and I DON'T want this!!!

It would truly be nice if they could just bleed some air from the cooling system and this would correct our problem but I'm not holding my breath. I'll let you know what I find out tomorrow after I bring it in. I have the 7 year Ford "Premium" Extended Warranty and according to the policy, this should still be covered on my '02 (until this October when my policy expires).

          Re: 2002 Air conditioning

I had a problem with the dual water control valve that allows each side to select a different temperature. It was an expensive replacement, but I later learned it is not that hard to do yourself if you are so inclined.

Its probably the flow control valve for the heater sticking open due to lack of use. A new one cost $180 or just take apart the one you have and clean it out. Its beter to drive these cars daily then to let them sit around in a garage......Ted

              Re: 2002 Air conditioning

If my memory serves me correctly, there's a heater control valve and I believe a hot and cold valve that controls the vents

One owner that had the same issues said "The diagnosis is : Defective Dual Coolant Flow Valve
The part number is : YG378
              Order through : directfordparts.com
              List Price : $155.54
              Their price : $91.61 w/shipping & handling $102.56"
He did his own work and saved on labor

Same thing happened to my 2002. Took it to a Lincoln/Mercury dealer and it was determined that the refrigerant was low and a re-charge was all it needed. That was 2 years ago and no problems since.
