    Re: Front and rear bushings

I have a 2004 bird with 91K miles on it. I keep it an unheated garage. I live in Chicago so the car experiences extremes heat and cold all year. In addition to that we have a terrible pot hole problem. Ever since seeing all these post about busing failure I've been have the mechanic check the bushings after every oil change. So far nothing. All the bushings are fine. I don't under stand it. Ed Clement

My 04 bird has 91k miles on it. I keep it an unheated garage. I live in Chicago, so the car experiences extremes of heat and cold all year long. In addition to that, we have a horrible pot problem here in Chicago. Since I noticed these post ,I have been asking my mechanic to check the bushings whenever I bring in the car for an oil change. So far nothing. The bushings are fine. I'm puzzled. Ed Clement

Rusty : We got bigger "pot" holes here, but 30 miles away it's LEGAL In Washington.

Last year my car with 15K miles on it needed the bushings replaced. Just rotted from age. Glad I had extended warranty which expires this coming January. Will have to shop and decide whether to find another extended warranty.

Finally drove Bird to dealer for bushings inspection. Dealer did not know I had ESP. and was taking forever to inspect car and put together a list of parts needed. I finally went to service desk and asked what was taking so long. Said tech was pulling together list and costs. I told him it didn't matter the cost because I had warranty.. He said I dont know if this work would be covered and wanted to know who' s warranty? Told him Ford.. "you mean ESP?" Yes..."well that's a whole new kettle of fish" He handed me the keys and said he will call me next week with appointment. No a bad deal for an11 year old car with 94,000 miles.

Roger, had mine done prior to the Black Hills Thunder. I have have an ESP with $50 deductible until March of 2019. My Ford dealer knows the car has an ESP so there is never an issue with covered repairs.

If any Ford service department puts your Vin number into their computer at the time you arrive for service & they begin to write up the service request their computer screen shows that the vin number has a Ford ESP. If you look at the paperwork they give you on the second line of the page just left of center there is a box titled WARR. EXP. It is on mine, I would expect would be the same on all the other Service Dept.s. Maybe not.

If the service writer begins to ask questions like whose or what warranty they are not reading their screen due mostly to the fact that not many cars like ours that are of the age of our would still be carrying a service warranty.

I'm looking for opinions from anyone that has had the bushing replaced rather than the whole arms. The price for the arms seems to be about double but the labor would be much less. Wondering if anyone can suggest a supplier for just the bushings

The upper control arms have a ball joint that should be replaced, however on the original OEM upper control arms (front and rear) the ball joint is not replaceable. The fronts are cheaper than the rears but most of the after market rear upper control arms have stopped making them. Rockauto does carry them for $278 each also Tasca Ford and other eBay dealers. The lowers both front and rear have bushings that can be replaced I would suggest if you do the front lowers to add the Caster/Camber adjustment bolt. eBay and Rock Auto both have the bushings without the control arms.
