  • CLUNKING NOISE GONE

Had the rear stabilizer links replaced today. Clunking noise is gone and it is a real pleasure to drive my Bird again. Had the same problem with my other '05 at 10K miles but it was repaired under warranty. My new '05 has only 7K but is out of warranty so I had to pay for the repair.
Ford dealer wanted over $300, my trusted local shop did the job for $198. Nice saving! Seems like bad links are an inherent problem with our Birds, since many members have had the same problem.
Today I'm happy and my Bird is happy, that's what counts.

I found the ride much improved also once I replaced the links. Let's hope they made a rubber compound improvement on these replacements.

Ron, did they replace the entire assembly or just the bushings?

Just the bushings. Made a big difference in the ride.

Just had mine replaced under the extened warranty. Clunk is gone and seems to ride better. They replaced the entire part.

To be honest, I don't know for sure if the entire unit was replaced or only the bushings. The part #'s are:
            FMC XW4Z 5C486 AA
            FMC XW4Z 5C487 AA

I'm sure some one here will know.

I was told the entire part had to be replaced, 1 per side. If bushings only are available, we'd like to know for the future.

                Re: CLUNKING NOISE GONE

I had an intermittent "clunk" from the rear when I'd hit a bump (but not always), in the Jag. I had the dealer check it out but they couldn't find anything; I figured it was one of those things that only happen when you're away from the dealer. Then one day while looking for something in the trunk I noticed the fire extinguisher lying in the spare tire wheel well - I wrapped it in bubble wrap - no "clunks" since then. {;-)>
