    Re: Splash Guards - opinions?

Some members have bought the T-Bird wings from the TBN store and attached them to the bottom of the mud flaps. Gives them a different kind of look.

You can call them Splash Guards if you want, but they're still Mud Flaps. As far as I'm concerned they don't belong on a Classic car as well as some of the other after market junk that is out there. If all that junk came on it from the factory everyone would be taking it off to make the cars look better or customized. When I was a kid we shaved the hoods and trunks, Frenched the lights, rolled the pans, changed the grill and hub caps, lowered the body, chopped the top, added skirts, but NO mud flaps. Leroy

These pictures remind me of Saabs from the late seventies which also had splash guards or mud flaps. And I ask myself: Do I want my Retro-Thunderbird to look like an old Saab?

                Re: Splash Guards - opinions?

The exhaust tips serve a purpose as well as give the car a custom look. I have removed my resinators on the exhaust system and replaced them with a straight through piece of pipe, thus giving the exhaust system a deeper, richer sound. But at certain engine RPMs there was a noticeable drone inside the car. The stock exhaust tips were not extended out past the body of the car far enough. The Stainless Steel extentions I have installed fit right over the stock Ford tips and I just drilled a small hole and put in a S.S. screw to hold each one in place. It was an easy fix to the problem and I've had quite a few positive comments on them and no negative ones. I found them in a JEGS catolog and they are made by PYPES. Leroy

rcjohny, They're made by Pypes and I found them on the jegs.com site. They're # 958 EVT-50. They're 3" ID on one end then reduce to 2.5" with a slash cut. They're 9" long and after they're on they stick out about 3". I though they might be out too far but if I cut them I would have to cut the slash cut end and would loose the PYPES logo etched on the ends. So far I'm happy with them and have alot of positive comments about them. They were $37.99 a pair plus tax and shipping. I don't consider these after market junk. Plastic glue on stuff and mud flaps are after market junk. And Sandman, you sent me a PM last Feb. saying you thought they were quote ( Pretty Cool ) and asked me to send you the info on them. Leroy

                      Bobby,
The black Splash Guards are 100 times less bling. Do you want me to send you a set of those to try out?

The best-looking thing I've seen on this thread so far is Leroy's pair o' pipes. Two thumbs up, Leroy. As for the rest ... interesting to look at, but not my style. To each his own. Or her own. I'm open-minded on matters social & political, but when it comes to my Retro just leave 'er be. That's Will.

Thanks, Aaron, but that's not necessary. As I said, I think you guys did a terrific job on these, and they are well made. I just don't know if they're right for me. Having said that, I'm gonna leave them on for another week or so to see if I change my mind. They may just take getting used to. I'll keep you posted!

                            Re: Splash Guards - opinions?

Splash guards are "tack on pieces"...........they interrupt the clean lines on your car and detract from it's appearance.

Splash guards do help keep the lower fenders free of crud and paint chips.

                            Sooooooo.......tough call.

                            Gotta decide.

Is is worth messing up the look to protect the look?

                            For Me?

                            No!

Then again I don't mind cleaning the car up daily if necessary and the composite materials that have replaced steel on those lower fenders doesn't chip as easily as cars I've owned in the past.

Ok... I have to admit it. I thought splash guards on a Tbird were crazy at first. The problem was that I received so many requests over the years that I finally decided to make them. The first thing that came to mind when I thought of mud flaps were truckers with naked ladies on them.... and, that wasn't going on my Tbird. I live in San Diego and we have minimal weather, so it never crossed my mind to protect my Tbird's paint by using mud flaps. It was funny because I was shocked to find out that they actually look good on my Tbird. I'm now sporting them full time. I honestly thought, no way will I have those on my Tbird full time. It's funny how things can change.
