2002 Finally got the dreaded COP problem

I haven't posted in a while. Business is going gangbusters and haven't had a moment to look up.

Getting close to 50,000 miles now. Car runs terrible, barely accelerates...

Well, now I am going to attempt to fix it myself. I bought a set of 8 Motorcraft coils brand new for $199. Now all I need is a set of valve cover gaskets and I am ripping that sucker apart. I cannot see this costing over $300 or so to make it all new again.

If some bozo at the dealer can fix it, I sure as heck can...

Has anyone installed new shocks on theirs themselves?

Steve, my car showed the "check engine" light the other day so I drove straight to the service department and left the car there.
Sure enough, it was the COPS. They fixed it and told me it was covered by an unannounced recall. No charge.

No such thing as an "unannounced recall". It was covered under the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty by FoMoCO.

On my paper that I got back, it says the repair was made per "07M07C" and "MT07M07".

In reading that list and their abbreviation list - it's a VSC or "Voluntary Service Campaign by the Manufacturer" therefore, not a recall which essentially requires all cars affected to be fixed even if symptoms are not showing. But it doesn't matter as you were able to get yours fixed. the 02s are not covered under that VSC.

Steve, I don't recall if anyone has replaced their shocks on their own. I'm sure someone will speak up about that.

They won't touch our 03 unless the engine light is on! Last time it was showing by my computer that #2 and #4 where missing intermiadiate. I unpluged the coils and drove for several minutes before light set. Light seems awfully slow to respond to misses. I poured a litlle oil in # 2 to trigger the valve cover gasket think since i knew there was oil in #8 that they wouldn't look at because light wasn't on after coming back from Maggie Valley meet.

Went to the dealer on Thur. they replaced #2 & 3 I waited till the engine light came on or pay a $112. charge if it didn't show up.
Karen many owners received a letter from FMC about this .I'm the second owner and received it.

Unfortunately the 2002 is not covered by that warranty, so I am just going to have to do it myself. My MIL has not come on, but I am getting some burning oil smell when we turn to enter the garage, so I am assuming the valve cover is leaking a bit. If I have to remove the valve cover to fix the oil leak, the coils have to come off anyway.
Its this curse I have... I just like tearing stuff apart. Heck, I can work on something until it is totally unusable, or even recognizable! The challenge to me is to see if I can come up with a fix to stop the oil leakage problem permanently. I have something in mind already, but won't bore anyone with technical details since most here are not gearhead types like I am. Will let you know how it turns out.
