  • Pacific coast model

    Hi all,
I'm busy learning about the various models of T'birds. This is a great place for that. There's a Pacific Coast model at a ford dealer with 38,000 miles and looks to be in very good shape. I drove it and it felt good. I like the color.
How do the cloth inserts wear? and will this model hold it's value as good as others because it isn't full leather seats? Asking price is $21,995. Good deal? Opinions and guidance needed and welcome. Also looking at a merlot/tan for $21K same mileage.
    Thanks

The Pacific Coast Roadster, PCR, will always hold its value as it is the Special Edition for the 2004 model year. Each year there was a Limited Edition, in 2002 it was the Neiman Marcus, a Black and Silver, in 2003 it was the Bond 007 Edition, a Coral color, in 2004 it was the Pacific Coast Roadster, Monterey Mist and Light Ash, and in 2005, it was the Cashmere Edition, color was Cashmere tricoat. As far as the seating, I think it's all in the maintenance, the leather in the Thunderbirds isn't of the highest quality and several members here have already had to do some re upholstery work. I have a Cashmere I bought new in 2005, if I could add a 2nd Thunderbird, it would definitely be a 2004 PCR.
If you havn't checked portholeauthority.com, check that site as well. A wealth of information, stats, colors, model info, etc.

      Thanks Bradford,
good info. I love the cashmere. That would be my dream tbird... but it's kinda at the top of my budget. The PCR is looking better. You think $22,000 is a goodt price for one in good shape.

      Thanks again,

Timbo, Definitely check a Carfax report. Remember, a car is worth what you are willing to pay for it. Looking at what has been some of the latest sales on these cars, $21-22,000.00 for a Special Edition does not seem to far out of line if the car is in good condition. Also, keep in mind, a lot of dealers are suffering with sales, i would definitely try to negotiate down and also try to negotiate a extended warranty as part of the deal. Check to make sure the car has the stand for the removable hardtop, the dust cover, tool for removing the hardtop as well as the tonneau / boot cover for when the top is down. These are expensive items to find and replace if they are not present. The Pacific Coast Roadster came with all of these items. If not there, use that as a negotiating tool or insist they provide as part of the sale. Also, have the dealer remove the hardtop and inspect the softtop. Look for wear, stains and operation of the power top.

          tmbo,
Welcome aboard! If I could add my two cents worth... My opinion is a PCR with low mileage like that and well maintained is worth the asking price. I do agree with Brad, do the CarFax and feel 'em out for a price reduction.

In this economy that is top dollar, you can do better.

              Hi Tim,

Welcome to TBN. Huntington Beach is such a cool place. You're a lucky guy to live there. With Pacific Coast Highway in your back door, a PCR would seem to be a great choice. When I saw my first PCR in person, I knew I had to have one. The lighter colored convertible top on both the PCR and Cashmere show dirt more easily. If you find a well-maintained car with a clean top and interior, I think you will find it fairly easy to maintain with a little effort. No regrets here.

              Good luck on your search.

              Chuck

Tim - Those aren't cloth inserts. That's suede. And they take a little extra care to keep them looking good.

"Preferred" suede is similar to ultra suede - each a man made product made to simulate real leather suede but easier to care for but as some are finding out, the suede look fibers tend to start looking like flannel pills from a lot of wear. (same thing is happening in our Lightning driver's seat.

                    Thanks for all the feedback.
Chuckster: Yes, you would think that the PCR would be the perfect choice living 4 miles from PCH. It has an understated classy look. But the merlot color really says wow. Thanks for the info on maintenance. The PCR is in real good shape. I guess the decision will kind of come down to price.
5bird7: the passenger seat is just starting to "pill". That is what caused me to question the value of the car compared to those that have full leather. But I guess that is of lesser importance compared to other factors about the car.
I need to take a deep breath and stop freaking out. I'm turning 60 next wednesday and this is going to be a birthday present to myself

                    Thanks again everyone

I, too plan to give myself a PCR for my 60th in seven months (just adding to the nest). However, this involves 'deleting' Charley's Shelby.

On second thought, if I plan to make it to my 60th, the 'deletion' is not an option!

As the proud owner of a PCR, I highly recommend the car. Just be really careful not to damage any interior parts because Ford never bothered to manufacture spares. It was only a few months out of production when I needed a replacement interior part and quickly discovered there were none. My Ford dealer told me he could get parts in any color but the PCR color. I had to settle for a "paint to match" solution. Worked great until scratched and now the real color is clearly visible.

I wonder of those paints that are supposed to bond with plastic would be the way to go to get matching paint that will last in the PCRs?

There are a few of us on here looking for replacement seat covers now. Ford does not make them any more and no one can find them. and they will start to look bad quick if you don't keep them cover up or you don't clean them right.
