I need some help ! After getting on the intersstate today,I jumped on the bird kinda hard. After inital downshift , it quit . Motor went to idle with no response at all . Step on the gas, nothing ,motor still at idle . Dreaded little wrench thingy lit up.Motor sounds funny as if its running on 4 or 6 cly. After limping home at idle, I turned it off and it restarted rite back up . Motor sounds fine but awful slow throttle, 3or4 seconds to spool up, and then only to 3000 rpms. Un plugged the batt , to no avail . I know its throttle by wire maybe a bad sensor? Thanks for any help as to what to look for first . Allen P.

Search for COPS (coil on plugs). Your car went into Limp Mode. So yes, it was running on about half the cylinders. Bad COPS is the most common reason when it happens like you described. For 2003 and up, it should be covered under warranty, regardless of your mileage.

      Re: Broken Bird

I'll throw some thoughts in but there's probably others that may have better suggestions.

possibly the mass air flow sensor?
      has fuel filter been changed?
      checked the oil level?
      cops starting to go bad?
      checked the temp gauge?

I will ck mass air flow as I have a K&N . Sometimes oil from filter will corupt the mass air sensor .

Will change fuel filter as Bird is on a new full tank.

        Oil changed Fri w/mobil 1

22000 miles dont suspect cops . Had a 2000 LS sport 5 speed I know what a cop proplem feels like .This aint it

        Temp normal .

Thank you ,I value your suggestions , Allen P

I thought my 2004 had coil on plug problem. It demonstrated your symptom. YIPPEE!! its covered under the factory recall. Sadly, local dealer informed me air flow sensor needed to replaced. No evidence of rodents in air filter box. I checked before I took in. If there is diagnostic software let me know. I believe I could have installed the part.

I think this is normal while in park only. Mine has done this since new. Never a problem with the car. I never thought much about it. [I] just figured Ford did not want folks to race the motor while in park/netral.

I had the same problem and the repair was a throttle sensor and the PCM reprogrammed. Part # 3L5Z*9B989*AA potentiometer-throttle. If you have an extended warranty, it should be covered.

My 2003 while in park will rev slowly and only to about 3000 rpm , been that way since new. I think that is the way it is set up so you cannot over rive the motor runs great when you put it in gear.

Look at this former post, may be your problem too.
Well, Saturday she started sputtering and even back-fired. So off to the dealer. Thought maybe a COP?

We found out today it's a vct solenoid. Variable cam timing sloeniod, there's two, one on each side, this was just one today. It stuck, therefore engine not able to adjust timing.

Need vcts replaced along with cam phaser and bracket[/B], covered under my extended warranty. $2,600.00.

I was glad I went by the dealer today, saw valve cover off and great looking cams.

                      Just FYI, travel safe!

Arter reading Rons and Johns post , I took a chance this morn and took the bird for a ride . I guess the thing fixed its self ! Runs great,no problems . Wont turn up fast ,past 3000 rpm in park. According to you guys this is normal .SO BE IT . I kinda wish I knew what happened though . Yesterday ,after turning it off and restart the wrench lite went out . I suspect the problem went away then . I would have spent 2or 3 hundred dollars for a definitive answer . Its like waiting for the other shoe to drop . Thank you all for your helpful posts . Allen P.

                            Re: Broken Bird

Allen, If I understand correctly, even though the CEL/MIL lamps went out, there should be a stored code in the computer. If you know someone with a code reader, you might be able to pull the last code out to see what the
issue was. You can go to most auto parts places to get the codes read
for free. Also, you can buy a code reader for future use. I had an F150 that
threw the MIL about every six months or so. I just bought a code reader
which supports the CAN protocol (newest standard that the Thunderbird uses).
I have never had any problems with my Thunderbird, but with a code reader
and the internet, I can keep my distance from the dealers.

Even though the wrench light went out does not always mean the problem is solved. The first time it happened to me I turned the car off and when I restarted the wrench light went out. Two days later the same problem so I went to the Ford dealer and they checked for a code and found the throttle sensor problem.
