  • Entered my first car show

Went to the 1st annual Woody Anderson Ford All-Ford Show here in Huntsville sponsored by the Rocket City Mustang Club on Saturday. What a blast! Mostly Mustangs, of course, but 5 tbirds were also in the show (including mine). A white 56, white 57, 04 TR, my 05 MSB, and a 93 SC. I didn't win anything (didn't enter to win anyway - just entered for fun), but the 56 and the 93 both won awards. 152 cars entered in all, including a Sunbean Tiger, a Pantera, a beautiful 73 Gran Torino, a couple of Model Ts, and s ton of Mustangs from all years, styles, and colors. Also had a Ford GT40 on display.

I thought I detailed the heck out of my car, but boy, did I get schooled by some of the folks out there! They parked me right next to the 56, whose owner was a really nice guy who had a couple of other birds as well (including a black retro). Talked my ear off all day long about tbirds!!

I din't win, anything, but I learned a LOT about what to do - and not to do - when entering a show. And I had a lot of FUN FUN FUN!

Attached are a few pics. Notice Dino's MSB that he did for me sitting in the engine compartment. Got a lot of compliments on it as well!

Proceeds from the show went to the Madison County Veteran's Memorial Fund - a very good cause.

Bobby, thanks for sharing those great pictures.... car shows are all about the people you meet - our Birds are stars of any show, and I am sure your first show will not be your last.

Well, you're hooked now! Enjoy all the fun you'll have at these gatherings. As Mark said, it's all about the people! Glad the diecast was a hit.

Super, Bobby. That diecast will draw attention along with your car. I watched several kids at a show a week ago, point out to their parents the diecast sitting on the boot of my car - and they were excited about it!

Didn't I hear or read somewhere (here?) recently that it's being noted that more of the retros are showing up at shows?

Local car shows are great fun. I have entered many over the last few years. Rarely is there another retro bird in the group of participants. I've won several awards (one for cleanest car in the show) - - -detailing is really an art form, if you do it properly. Those judges can be tough as nails when they inspect your car. Yes, I once had a judge with a white glove put his finger in my exhaust - - -he took off points because it came out dirty. Oye !

My bird always attracts attention from young and old alike. I display THREE diecasts (different sizes) on the boot - kids love them. Great way to spend a nice day with a bunch of wonderful people.

Re: Entered my first car show

I've entered many contents in the last seven years sponsored by our local Thunderbird Club (Chicagoland Thunderbirds), Frankfort Car Club and Lincoln Thunderbird Club and have won numerous awards. At first, they didn't know what to do with the retrobirds and I felt it was more a popularity contest.

In the last year or so I've seen the judging forms for the rero birds and honestly, I have modifications on my car that take points off because they want a totally "stock" car to be judged with the highest score. I guess the only way to win using that criteria is to enter in the "modified" category. I really don't care because I love the modifications I've made and the judging doesn't affect my decision to have made them in the least.

Meeting people at these events is now, by far, the main reason I will choose to attend and I go more now to support the club.

As the years go by, I enter less and less and enjoy driving my car the way I want it more and more.

Re: Entered my first car show

In the last show I entered the judges deducted points for the car having...

                - a wood dash kit
                - a K & N cai
                - a non stock exhaust system
                - non stock V-8 emblems

plus they insisted on me removing the boot and leaving the top half up/down so they could inspect both sides of the top and the interior lift mechanism.

I think that if I enter any more I won't bother having the car judged.

Re: Entered my first car show

Last year my Son asked if I would like to enter my Bird with his 07 Shelby Mustang in a local car show. Out of about 120 cars entered they gave out 30 First Place Plaques. I was surprised that we both got one, plus the local news paper did an article of Father and Son Enter they're Rides with a picture of one of my Grandsons wiping off his Dad's car with mine in the backround. It was alot of fun. My car was entered in the Roadster Class and my number was 007. There was also a Dusk Rose 1957 TBird that got a award also. During the day they gave out prizes if you had the original window sticker and other documents and other stuff. Leroy

Re: Entered my first car show

Mike and Rick, that's what happens at many Thunderbird shows as they emphasize keeping cars stock for education purposes. CTCI has so many classics that have been "personalized" that they have both modified and original classes. The modified classes usually have many more entries. But they just don't judge the retros which are relegated to display areas if entered in the show. Our retros will probably go that route if we should ever form a specific retro club for them.

We show ours at local show and shines where the cars are judged for cleanliness & slight modifications are allowed, but that also puts us up against other makes and models since they usually divide classes by years instead of make/model. Most judges don't know the specifics of particular cars so they really can't judge on how stock a car is. The only exceptions are when a large number of one type show up and usually a separate class is made for those.
In our area we have to contend with the high number of GM owners.

I still remember a comment made by a designer that they enjoyed reading the forums when the cars were new to see what mods the owners were putting on their cars. (just don't remember who said it??)

                          Bobby:

Great you got in there and enjoyed it. My 05 Black has won a number of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards over the years. In my gallery is a pic of me holding a 2nd place plaque from a show in 2005. Lots of fun just to go. I rarely make TBird only shows and consequently wind up in the division that includes all makes and models from 1989 & up. Usually the largest division at every show. With rare exceptions mine is the only retro bird.

The biggest show in Illinois is every year happens on the 2nd Sunday of October (11th this year) in Morris, IL. Mike knows this show (try to make it this year Mike) Over 1,000 cars every year. Never won a trophy in that show, over 60 cars from 1986 up in my division every year, but I'll keep trying.

Ironically, I have not been to any shows this summer, too busy, but I'll be at the Morris show, weather permitting.

Anyway, keep going, it grows on you.

Keeping your car in original condition is always a plus at any car show and to hold it's value if you ever deside to sell it. Leroy

If you entered it in a stock class, they did the correct thing by deducting the points. When you do anything to change the stock appearance or performance, you move to a modified class
