    Re: In Defense of T-Birds

YES! Everyday that we are out. In-fact just last Sat. while parked right in our own driveway I look up, there is this unknown to me, car doing a U turn & pulls to the curb. Out jumps this husband / wife team briskly walk up the drive saying "can we look at your car, its beautiful. Just love the look and the color".
I just stood there with a big wide grin and said many times over & over Thank You. Thanks Invited them to sit in the Bird but they were to taken with just the Bird's appearence and continued to walk around and around it admiring it. Then they left as quickly as they arrived.

    Great fun!
    Mike

Anyone who deems it necessary to 'criticize' the T-Bird simply doesn't get it. That's fine, because I don't want to see myself coming at every street corner and 5 times in between.
Thunderbird owners all share the same secret--they GET IT!

I trust our grandson's opinion when he gave us two thumbs up with a "Fonzie" stance and a big "Wow! That is coooool!!" when he saw our car with the matching trailer and whitewalls and he is only three!

BEst reactions are from the kids and teens, who have no or few preconceptions. They know what looks good. hmm, maybe that's why we like the birds so much - we're still kids.

                      Re: In Defense of T-Birds

                      Honestly?

Let's face it the car did miss the mark for a lot of people........it would have sold better if this weren't the case. The average age of a T-Bird owner is some-what higher than cars like the Corvette. (Not sure what that says about me owning both)

Still, I actually like the idea the car wasn't a huge sales success.

While I try to never compare the car to the Corvettes I love too.......the cars really only share the two seat idea............I will for this one thought.

I just LOVE the fact that I can go for a ride on a nice summer day and have a REASONABLE expectation that I won't see another T-Bird.

If I want to wave to fellow owners at every other intersection I'll take the Corvette.........when I want to drive something a little more unique........I take the T-Bird.

Still more often it comes down to ......Some days I want a comfortable cruise.......some days I want to carve the corners and maybe let the juvenile side come out and abuse a pair of expensive rear tires.

Ford could have made the T-Bird more appealing to the "boy racer" crowd but I think they'd have lost the real feel of a Thunderbird in the attempt.

I like it "as is". No excuses necessary.

                        Re: In Defense of T-Birds

Like I have said I don't care what the color or the year there is nothing like a Retro Bird!

If I am feeling a little down I just get in the car and drive a couple of miles and someone is going to look at it and/or say something positive about it and I am feeling better.

                          Re: In Defense of T-Birds

In 2006 when I bought my '05 I also purchased a yellow 1:18 model of the Tbird at a local Ford dealer. A month ago our pastor's 14 year old son made some nice comments about my car after church.

I thought back to when I was 14 and how a new (then) '56 was purchased by our next door neighbors grown son. I really liked that Black '56 with the porthole top and the continental kit!

I gave my little yellow Tbird model to Patrick, the pastor's son, and told him I knew how he felt. Told him when I was his age I too felt like life would be so much better if that little '56 was mine. I suggested he use the scale model as inspiration and someday he too could be Tbirding!

As for the T-bird missing the mark, let me make a few comments.
There is more to the story.
First the car was shown at early Auto Shows and promised to debut
for the 2000 model year at a price in the low $30,000 range.
Instead, it came out as a 2002 at a price of $39,000, and up, and dealers were allowed to sell them at any price they could get. I am acquainted with some dealers
asking $5,000 to $10,000 over sticker initially. That stiffled sales for some time
until the prices came more in line with value.
I ordered one before they came out, and did not take it because the dealer wanted
                                more than $5,000 over list.
Now that I have my '04 Blackbird, I will say it was well worth the wait and I love it!
