  • Steering Wheel Position

In the last week or so when I put the key in the ignition, the steering wheel does not always go to the programmed position. It has happened again today for the third time and have to do it manually. Is there a reason for this or does anyone know an easy fix. I searched and could not find a thread on this subject.

    SOUNDS LIKE A WEAK BATTERY.

I have had this happen earlier this year and had to take it to the Ford dealership to be repaired. My extended warranty covered it, no charge. Mine got stuck in the top most setting so I looked like I was driving a tractor.

I can change manually when it did not do automatically, and has worked the last few days with no problems. Just wondering why it does it once in a blue moon, and I know it's not because of holloween

Steve, I had the same thing happen a couple a weeks ago. I was cleaning the interior for a show. The only thing I can think of of was I hit the adjuster for the tilt ajustment. It took a few tries but I think I re programed it. I'm I nuts or what? It worked

Steve & Dick: Had a similar problem last year when we were at a car show in Port Hope. On the way home we stopped for gas, and when I restarted, the wheel would not come forward. Something did not feel right, and driving this way was a bit strange. What the heck ! Carol said , lets check the owners manual. OWNERS MANUAL ? What is an owners manual . Owners manual said to adjust the steering wheel, when not driving the car, and adjust the wheel to suit driver. Did that on our next stop and not a problem since. OWNERS MANUAL ? Who needs one of those.

YES, but the question remains.......WHY does it happen? Why sometimes at key in doesn't the steering wheel come to its programed position?

In the 2005 Ford Service manual for our retro Birds there is 15 pages of trouble shooting directions to repair a faulty telescoping steering wheel. This looks to be a Ford service repair/replace problem.

What is also weird is that I once accidentally put my Ford Escape key into the Tbird and though the key wouldn't turn, the steering wheel came to life.

I just changed the battery in the 96 Tbird last year and it was the origional battery in it. It only has little over 30,000 miles on it though.
