    the awe factor

I already know that we all get this almost everywhere we go, but can you think of a time you almost did not want it.

I went to my favorite beverage store today and I always park at the farthest I can away from cars, but today, there was not a person in the lot, so I pulled up front and went in. Then the people behind the counter started asking me questions about my car and admiring it. Of course you socialize, and before you know it the store was full and so was the lot and I was trying to get out. It was a hard thing to do as different ones was getting in the conversation and all the time I was worried about was MY CAR IS UP IN FRONT OF THE DOORS.

Steve, I still haven't got that ingrained into George's head that just because a parking lot is empty one moment, it'll fill up behind your back. happens all the time, so my habit is to park out, aways, keeping in mind the time of day and when people shop. then, there's the awe factor you speak of and most people will be courteous so you luck out for another day. :)

Steve, I can just picture the expression on your face as the cars and people accumulate....

Like many, I park my TBird waaaay back in the parking lot, and everytime at least one car parks next to me - most likely just to irritate me !!

Enjoy your TBird in these few days left before the snow and ice reality.

        Hi there Steve!

Man I would have been in panic mode under those circumstances too.

I can recall an incidence that happened to me a number of years ago with my 64 Thunderbird which I have always cherished. I took it to the mall and parked at the farthest end of the parking lot awaaaaaaaaaay off in the corner parked on an angle taking up several parking spots. Nothing around it.

I went into the bank and I swear I was only in there 15 minutes and when I returned there was a car hot rod parked on either side of my baby so close that I could not even get into it.

I had to wait for the two clowns to come back to their cars so I could leave. No marks on my car, it turned out that it was two guys that thought they were being funny, but I was P.O.'d

So even when you park off on your own, these cars are a magnet and people not only want to look at them they also want to park next to them no matter how far from the door you park.

Glad you got away without a problem.

I learened my leason long time ago before my Thunderbird, that you do not do the double parking diagonally. It draws too much attention the wrong way.

Steve, I have found that even if you park as far out as you can with parking lot empty. Some MAROON will park as close as he can even with lot empty...................

I know a guy who targets cars taking up two spaces and keys them in what he calls a "spirit of public service for rude a....les" . He's probably not the lone ranger.

Probably a good way for the "public spirited" guy to take a bullet if he crosses the wrong individual. [smilie=2,4,36]

I parked mine at the furthest possible spot at the mall. When I came out there was a police cruiser parked in front of her and I could see the cop walking all around her. Longest walk of my life, wondering if someone had smashed the windows, hit her, keyed her.....

When I approached he asked if it was mine. I told him yes, what's wrong?

He said he thought it was stolen and dumped there and asked why I parked so far away. Obviously not a car guy.

Should have parked it closer to the donut shop <G>.

I would think that anyone wanting to dump a stolen car he/she woud be smart enough to park it in amongst many others to hide it from view or behind the mall.

Or maybe in front of the donut shop as Bob suggested, the cop would never see it there!

Not sure that I condone that at all...but I do tend to leave a lugie on their hood or windshield when I find a car that's taken up 2 spaces and not in the north 40.

To get this thread back on track...

A couple of weeks ago, I drove the 02 to the local Star Bucks. Not many people in the shop, so an educated looking mid-aged man asks: "is that your T-Bird?, Does the top come off?, That must be Ford's answer to the Dodge Challenger?"--apparently, He was unaware that the new T-Bird is already a come-and-gone piece of Americana.

Another day, I was at a bagel-shop, and someone queried the cashier about "whose T-Bird is that"--and the Cashier made the announcement out loud, which I personally found akward.

Most recently, was when I drove the 02 to work, and was asked "what is that?" "What is that supposed to be like?" "Is that like the old...?" "I never heard of anything like that." Also another co-worker also never heard there was such a thing. Evidentally, the renaissace of the two-seater Thunderbird is not very familiar to many, many people. All this certainly lends to the mystique of the classics that we have already learned to appreciate.
