  • A little help please!

Having a problem getting the cruise control to work. Can someone tell me, when the car is stationary with the engine running and you press the cruise control on switch, does the green light on the dash illuminate or do you have to be moving?

I am not worried about the operation of the cruise, just knowing when the green light comes on helps.

I am trying to fault find the switch, and don't know if it's working because I don't know when it should come on....

    Many Thanks....!

David -- Check your owners manual but I think the cruise control indicator light only comes on when the cruise control is engaged. And I think that the cruise control will only engage if you are traveling at least a certain speed and higher which I think is 35 MPH.

Welcome to TBN by the way.

      Re: A little help please!

Thanks very much for your reply, however there is nothing in the manual explaining this. The bulb in the dash doesn't even come on with the ignition test....but the bulb does work as evidenced by the bulb test routine.

It really needs someone to sit in the car and press the on switch and see if the light comes on. I think it should because otherwise you have no idea if the system is active or not. Also it would mean you would have to keep switching it back on every time you can to a stop.

I understand the system resets when turning off the ignition but when it is on it should show a light, even if the cruise will not work actively below 35mph?

      Kind Regards

      David

        Re: A little help please!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but on all the Fords I have owned the curise indicator light ONLY comes on when the cruise control is actually engaged. The off/on switch is how you turn the system on (which you have to do every time you start the car). The best way you can test this is to drive the car, turn the system on, and then hit the Set Cruise button. If the cruise engages and the light comes on on the dash you are in business and all is working as it should.

          Re: A little help please!

I have never owned a ford before, with this one my girlfriend's new toy; but it does seem a little strange to not have an indicator or something to tell you the system is "armed". I have tried driving to 35mph and switching it on but nothing!

I have ordered a replacement switch, and will install that when it arrives ( I am in the UK so takes a little while), the problem being that if it isn't the switch or the clockspring, fault finding can be a headache. The problem with the switch is that it works on a multiplex system so even pluging it into the radio control side to prove it works actually proves nothing.

Wish Audi had built this car....;-))

Thunderbubba I believe you are correct. I own three Fords and to the best of my knoweledge the indicator light even goes off when cruising at set speed and step on brake to cancel. Even though cruise is on and speed is still set. Hit resume and idicator will come back on and cruise speed will be obtained once again as long as vehicle has not slowed below 35 MPH.

Lon and Marty, that's the way it works on mine, too. Only when I'm cruising and have hit the "set" button does the light come on. in other words, to answer your question directly, Dave. Yes, car has to be in motion, switch toggled to turn on, and set button pushed.

What reminds me that I haven't turned it on, is when I try to "set" the button and the car slows down!

Dave, you are pushing the toggle button on the lower left side of the steering column when you're turning on the cruise, right?

                Re: A little help please!

Yes sir, pushing the toggle button does diddly sqwat!

Have ordered a new switch assy ($19.00) and a new clockspring ($40.00) just in case.....other than this it could be expensive to fix.

No real info on where the fuse is for the cruise either.....I have researched.

Thank you for your time though guys, it is very appreciated...

                  Re: A little help please!

Just like the rest of the Fords I have owned / driven...speed has to be set before the light comes on.

Ahhh!! You do know, you have to turn it on, BEHIND the Steering wheel, Right? The toggle switch does NOT turn it on.

You've found the correct buttons, David. but you do have to have the car moving. The speedometer may be "off" so try it at 40mph

                          Re: A little help please!

                          David,
Cruise is armed to use your term when the off/on toggle switch located on the left side sort of under the lower spoke of the steering wheel is moved to the on position.

It does NOT turn on any indicator lights on the dash. Nor should it as cruise has not been engaged. Cruise can only be engaged if speed is above 30(48k/m) and car is going forward(cruise will not work in reverse, sorry I had to put that in, never know what people will expect).

When the speed reaches 30(48k/m) or higher pressing the SET button on the left side of the steering will now turn on the cruise indicator light which is a small green circle and cruise is engaged. Anytime the car slows from climing a hill more than 10(16k/m) below your set speed cruise will drop out and the indicator light will go out. Press RES car will pickup speed back to your set speed. The same is true if you step on the brake, cruise will drop out and the indicator light will go out.

The only time that the cruise circuit is dis-armed is if you turn it off with the switch or shut off the ignition.

This information can be foound on page 42-43 of the owner's manual.

There is NOT a fuse in any part of the speed control or cruise control circuit. Information & power source is from the Front Electronic Module. From there goes to auxillary junction box located on the left hand A pillar. From there into the steering wheel assy/clock spring and on to the speed control-cruise control switches. At the clock spring look for a ye/bu wire on pin 4. That is where you will find the speed control switch signal. For reference here is some more pin 2 is audio control. pin 3 is common. pin 5 is horn switch sense & 6 is horn ground.

                          Hope this is some help.
                          Mike

I don’t how to post pictures so maybe someone that does could take a picture of the on/off switch on the side of the wheel and post it so David can see it.

Absolutely Mike. But whereas he was saying he had no light. You have to engage the system, BEFORE you can set the cruise, which turns on the light.
