There have been some 49 state autos that do not meet CA smog std.




Question: Did all the 02 to 05 Tbirds meet California smog standards, even if orignally sold in another state?

I would think, but do not know for certain, that the Vehicle Description paper, the window sticker, would have to say on it Not For Sale In CA if the TBird did not meet CA emissions.

On my 05's Vehicle Description paper there is no mention of any state's emission standards.

There were so few of these cars made, that it wouldn't make sense for Ford to make the ones only sold in CA different than all the others.

I'm willing to bet real money there is no difference whether they were sold in CA or any other state.

I bought my car out of state in 2001. It had to pass California smog standards before registering it there. I was told by numerous people including smog techs and Ford representatives that all T-birds meet California smog standards when they left the plant.

Thanks everyone for your coments! ---------I am not sure. But I believe all cars built in the last 15 years will have a smog certification somewhere around the top of the radiator area. The cert. says for all states including Calif. / or all states except CA. Would some of you other states, please check for that sticker.

The question comes up when looking at out of state Tbirds with low mileage. At Ca DMV site it seem, any use car may be brought into the state and registered. But, here is the problem, If the car has less than 7500 miles it is considered new and must meet Ca Std. or no registration.

Yes RetiredFire the 2002 - 2005 Thunderbirds had 50 State engines in them.

Any car in California younger then 25 years has to pass California smog to be registered regardless of original build specs. You can't sell one without a smog certificate.

This question was asked many years ago when these cars were new. The Calif. cars have a special sticker or something that said it passed CA state smog requirements, but as has been said above, if the car is from out of state, it has to pass their smog test. Just hope you haven't bought one that someone has removed any of the smog control devices that were originally on these cars.

and yes, all of our cars were built to the same standard and would meet CA state smog requirements but they still have to go thru that inspection when coming in to the state.
