  • Second Key Programing

My 03 came with only 1 key. After trying all methods of finding the original 2nd key I went to local Ford service dept. They estimated about $150 for new key and remote with programing.
I thought that was plenty but I needed it. When I went to pick it up I had to pay $150 and got a key and remote that weren't programed.
This it what they said.... Unable to program key and fob due to inability to access the security module. Reason for inability to enter module could be one of the following reasons: 1. security module access not granted through the instrument cluster, disabling self test of security module. 2. broken wires leading to pcm and security module. 3. connections on any of the terminals leading to or from the module could be damaged or broken.
In shop wires were checked at diagnostic controller plug , voltages were OK , but did not go further into the inspection of wires ,or removing cluster for further diagnostics.
Estimate time ...at least 4 hours...$280.00 for tracing through wires and cluster removal.
They also said the cluster with module would cost over $ 350.00.Alot of money for 1 key.
Is there any way to bypass the security system and eliminate the programmed key? They said I could dig the chip from my only key and glue it by the switch.
    Any Ideas ?.....................Thanks ,John

    Re: Second Key Programing

John, try a Lincoln dealer. I gave $8 for a key programmed for my car. The technician needed both my working keys to program the extra one. Took him about 5 minutes. Ken

Thats the trick,You need both keys to easily clone a third. To get a second one you have to erase the first one and reprogram both the first and new second key. for some reasons they can't get their machine to link with my module on the instrument cluster to do the nessesary work.

This is a great thread -- thanks. I have one remote but both keys -- and wanted to get a second remote. I must admit -- the first one does not work as well as it should either.

I did notice in the ESP, it covers Keyless Entry System -- would that cover some of the issue in Lostjohn's situation? Of course - not talking about the replacement key and remote -- but the error message of crossed, broken, damaged wires, etc.? Do you have any warranty on the car?

The ford dealer was able to do mine w/o any trouble. When I purchased the vehicle it had ony one key. Sounds like you need to take it to another dealer or a locksmith

I copied this from an old thread, but use the search function for more:
HOW TO REPROGRAM YOUR REMOTE ENTRY TRAMSMITTERS:

First, you must have ALL remote entry transmitters (maximum of four) available before beginning this procedure. To reprogram the remote entry transmitters:
            1. Ensure the vehicle is electronically unlocked.
            2. Put the key in the ignition.
            3. Turn the key from the 2 (OFF) position to 4 (RUN). [NOTE: Position 1 is fully counterclockwise (key removal), and Position 5 is fully clockwise, or the IGNITION position]
            4. Cycle, eight times, rapidly (within 10 seconds) between the 2 (OFF) position and 4 (RUN) position. [NOTE: The eighth turn must end in the 4 (RUN) position.]
            5. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming mode has been activated.
            6. Within 20 seconds, press any button on the remote entry transmitter. [NOTE: If more than 20 seconds have passed you will need to start the procedure over again.]
            7. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that this remote entry transmitter has been programmed.
            8. Repeat Step 6 to program each additional remote entry transmitter.
            9. Turn the ignition to the 2 (OFF) position after you have finished programming all of the remote entry transmitters.
            10. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming mode has been exited.
And, here is the procedure for programming your PATS Keys:
            1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder. [Requires two existing working keys]
            2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.
            3. Remove the existing key and, within 5 seconds, insert the second existing key and turn it to ON (RUN) then back to OFF.
            4. Insert the new key before ten seconds have elapsed, and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it on for one second and turn back to OFF.
            5. The security light will light up for three seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed.

One guy tried this and it didn’t work…took it to a Ford guy and here’s what he did:

Well, I did not remove a battery cable, but rather I called the local Ford dealership, and a nice person there told me to bring my T-Bird over, and he would program it without writing up a ticket. I watched him do the exact same things I did, but the only thing being that he did the 8-time-ignition switching very, very fast (I am certain that I did mine well within the 10 second time limit, but who knows?), and lo-and-behold the doors automatically cycled, and so he was able to program both of my key fobs.

              Re: Second Key Programing

You don't have to have any FOBS to program new FOBS, but must have at least two programmed keys to program additional keys yourself. When the Dealer plugs in to the key programing section of the vehicle computer, it takes 20 minutes before the computer can acess the program screen. This is a security measure. Ford figures if a car thief gets his hands on a computer he will not sit there twenty minutes waiting for computer to access screen. Go to another dealer.

Thank's Yelobird2002, You might be on to something! they programed the 2'nd fob no problem. It' s the 2'nd key . Maybe they didn;t wait the 20 min. That would explain alot more than broken wires or module problems. Everything else on the car works perfectly. I'll stop by tomorrow and talk with the service mgr. thanks John

                  Re: Second Key Programing

the $150 charge is about right, if they gave you something that worked. Bought my car privately and made the owner pay for a second key. I decided that I should have a third made in case I ever lost one.
It took the dealer three tries before I got a key that worked, first would not turn, wrong blank, second would not program as it had the wrong chip, finally got one that worked.

I think that might be the "key" to John's problem.

                      Re: Second Key Programing

Well I just got home from the dealer.... as to what Yelobird said about the key programming section of the computer{which is in the cluster] the dealers machine can't get past the security part of the module to access the programming section. he says he done other keys since mine and had no problems. all of the self test that he runs shows no problems so he thinks the cluster/module is bad. But its odd because everything else works perfectly! He says if I bring the car by he will hook it up to show me. Says maybe it might work the second time. He sent me home with a 3' thick T-bird workshop manual so I can read up on it. They are definetly working with me are a decent shop. Thats about all I know for now...John

                        Re: Second Key Programing

We pay cash for our cars and 90% of the time for some reason or another there is only one key but they say they will replace ASAP. Sure enough 10-12 days later the second key shows up just about the time the check clears the bank. Due to the number of times this has happened is it possible they are holding onto the second key so they can recover the car if the check bounces. Just an observation.

No, not the problem. I finally heard from the original owner, She said when she traded it in this summer it only had 1 key and she can't find the 2nd. But she did say the top rack and cover were in the trunk , But nobody at the dealer knows anything about them ! I believe her sincerity. John
