If the battery goes dead there is a special key trunk release behind the front seat. How does it work. It does not seem to be mechanical. If it isn't, will a total battery failure also nock out the special trunk release behind the seat?

If the Battery has gone dead, how can it be anything else but mechanical .

I'm not sure what the mechanism is, but I can confirm that it works even when the battery is dead. I've had to use it a couple of times, the latest being today unfortunately. Next purchase... new battery.

It must be mechanical as it works with the battery completely disconnected.

Test it, Ed. If it doesn't work for you then it needs repair.

If the mechanical release will not work, you can charge the battery through the cigarette lighter receptical. I thought i had seen these available on ebay at one time. If not make your own from a old spotlight that plugs in there. Just be sure to get your positive and negative correct.

The mechanism is definately mechanical. I have had to use it several times. Just insert your ignition key into the receptical and turn it to the right just like starting your car.

It's a cable system. Everyone that is fairly new to the Nest should check the key release out to make sure that it is working as there has been a few that had to be adjusted including mine because it wouldn't work.

Any other way to get the trunk open? Our key release behind the drivers seat is not working

                        Don,
Read post #6 in this thread..........
The only way is to get a cigarette lighter charger/emergency start thingy from a parts house. Plug it into the lighter and push the electric trunk release on the door, this should open the trunk.
We won't talk about the other method, which involves a large hammer and a hacksaw. In other words, you have to cut through the trunk lid.
