  • 2002 with sudden acceleratio

Greeting to all! New here and have a 2002 that speeds up when the brakes are applied. Only does it once in a while but is a wreck waiting to happen. Any help or directing me in the right direction would help! Thanks Mel

Welcome to the site and a good question for the site and your dealer.

Check the position of your foot on the brake and gas pedal. It's possible that you're stepping on both at the same time. You may have to change how you position your foot on either.

A common situation, as Dot has pointed out, your foot postion is key here. The two pedals are so close to one another that if while wearing shoes with a wide sole shape it is very easy to apply pressure to both pedals at the same time. And this will give you the effect of speeding up while attempting to brake.

It has happend to me only with one style of shoe that I wear. It is something to be aware of.

Happened to me too when I first had the car.

Mike is right. It happens to me more often if I have sneakers on and seldom with regular shoes. Just have to be aware.

Happened to me also. I had to learn to move my foot more when stepping on the brake.

Happened to me once. Almost crashed into the back of a bus. Just move you foot a little more to the left and you'll be OK.

There was also a TSB for cars made between 11/02-5/03 that addressed this. The TSB was labeled "Harsh Shifts". Mine did it several times, and it wasn't from pushing on both pedals at the same time. There were times when I had both feet on the brake pedal pushing as hard as I could to get it to stop. Scared the heck out of me. After the TSB was applied, it never happened again.

I learned to drive in a standard (a few years ago, no comments), but to this day I always brake with my left foot and the right never leaves it's position on the gas peddal other than up and down. Anyone else drive this way ?

Before my grandma passed away, bless her heart, she drove this way.

My spouse does/did quite frequently - he had to, to keep several of his trucks running when he came to a stop as he kept the idle too low. It was easier than fixing the problem of low idle. I can not do it - or the passenger ends up in the windshield. (I quit driving his cars due to that problem)

Yes Ray, that's TSB 03-15-08, but I thought it was for 2003 models - He has a 2002. Also doesn't mention surging forward, unless I forgot
