Don has called them correctly. I had chrome "Lakes pipes" on my 1951 Chevy Coupe, when I was a teenager. The "Lakes pipes" were capped off when driven on the street, so the exhaust normally exited through the tailpipes below the rear bumper.

Lake or Lakes doesn't really matter, I think it's just a regional or generational difference.

Wait, must be generational because both you and the Beach Boys differ
          and your both Californians

          Now Nike's [no "E"] vs ["E"]
Or Porsche [no "E"] vs ["E"]

When I was growing up the "E" was silent in both words
now almost everyone adds it to the end of both words when pronouncing them.

MAGIC E WORDS (often known as split digraphs)
Read the following words out aloud. Notice how the "magic e"
affects the way we say the previous vowel.
          cap cape slop slope
The way we say the -a- in cape is different to the way that
we say it in cap. This is because of the magic e.

            Thanks JAB02 -
            I learned something.
I still think that the pipes would lower the profile of the car - hitting the asphalt and other objects.

yes! These are typical Lake Pipes in Joisey. Not quite that noisey, but smell whenever you "step on the gas".

                Especially prevalent in the Pinelands.
