  • Value of a "New" 2002 RetroBird

After reading several of the posts during the last few days regarding the collectibility and value of our Birds - especially low mileage ones, I just have to throw this out for comment and opinions.

Last week when I parked at the post office (I always find an end spot with lots of room), a guy approached me about my Tbird. At first I thought he was a fellow-enthusiast. Then he told me that he had purchased a new Tbird in 2001 strictly as an investment. He said the car has never been driven and has been in storage it's entire life. It's started every so often. He said the car has never been titled, and he hopes this will add to it's collectible value. I'm not sure how you own a car in NC for over 8 years without having it titled, but there must be a way. He's interested now in selling, although he knows it's probably not the right time. A local Ford dealer told him that he should start at $50,000 (and go down from there.) Even at $50,000, that's only about 5% annual return. I couldn't give him much encouragement, but I did tell him about the Nest and Dot's site as great sources of information about his car.

Many of us 2002-2005 Thunderbird owners don't drive these cars daily. As such there are plenty of good clean low mileage Thunderbirds still out there at half the price or less than the $50,000 this gentleman is planning on asking. Good luck.

If he purchased the car, I would think it is 'titled' , but perhaps not/never plated. Not sure if that is the way it works in your state. 20 years from now he may get his money back. Then again, who knows . There could be someone out there that will pay any amount to get a brand new 2002. His warenty has run out I would guess.

If the car was never titled then the title is still in the dealer's name and the only proof of ownership he has is a bill of sale. There may also be fines for not transfering the title in a reasonable amount of time payable to the BMV? I would think would need to be titled for insurance perposes? Leroy

The Thunderbird Blue '02 on ebay with 39.5 miles, and still literally "in the wrapper", was a no sale at $27K. Has been relisted at $22K.

Just remember, since it's over 8 years old now and out of warranty, it's still possible to get a used car warranty from Ford, particularly with those very low miles. The used car warranty would carry thru for 4 years.

Chuck, As long as he doesn't apply for a state registration to secure a license plate he technically doesn't need a title ... That said, he is playing with fire no pun intended if he were ever required to file an insurance claim (but then if he paid cash with no lien he is not required to insure real property) as the vehicle is not registered for use on public roadways.

Here is the linc to ebay listing. Already has four bids. Just note that the $22,850.00 is the present bid and has a (reserved not met) below it. No way to tell the reserve.
