  • Laying rubber

    I commonly see threads put up here on how owners "baby" their cars. I wonder who, rather than keep their cars as garage queens, have laid rubber. If so, where? How long was the streak? How did you do it (e.g., stomping on the accelerator, using the brake and accelerator together? Do you consider it to be beating the car?

    • Down the street from our house
    • Approx.200 ft., both tires
    • A slight powerbrake and then mash the pedal (shifting through the gears)
    • Yes, the transmissions really don't like it.

      With cold air intake air mod. it will break loose when it shifts to second at full RPM throttle shift too when the traction controll is in the FUN position.

            My Bird is way to classy to lay rubber. She has, however, on occasion "chirped". This was early on while I was getting reacquainted to having 8 cylinders.

            (Question takes me back to when my dad, for some reason, bought an Olds Cutlass [midnight blue, white convertible top and interior] for our lead-foot happy family. First time he took it in for PA inspection, it required 5 new tires to pass. All of them were peeled down to the threads. He was not happy.)

              For laying rubber I have a Saleen Mustang for that with 483HP and 464TQ at the rear wheels. My Birds are strickly cruisers and comfortable to drive.

                My dad bought a new '55 Buick Century (small body with Roadmaster V8) The first night he had it a friend of mine taught me how to rev it three times and drop it into gear. This was the life that poor Century was destined to live every time I drove it. A slave to laying rubber and high speed driving. Laid rubber like a champ and topped out around 130. Tires lasted about four months. Made sure my kids had cars that needed a tail wind to get up to speed.

                      Yes with traction control off and tranny in drive; don't shift it manually. It will lay a 200ft patch quite easily but this really isn't the type of car to do this with.

                        Yes, a couple of times with buddies pushing me to...

                        I impressed them and even suprised myself how good the marks were...

                        That was before I put Borlas, cold air intake, and new tires on...

                            We also had a 2 door 55 Century. That was never at a loss for power, but as a family car with 4 kids, it got a little tight sometimes.

                            Wish we still had that car... it was one of my favorites!

                              Guys, we have probably stolen this thread but the '55 Century was a classic. My dad also had one that he bought in 1956. I had a friend who drove his father's '56 Oldsmobile Super 88 and one night we came up to each other at the stoplight on Main Street in West Hamilton, Canada.

                              The routine for the Buick was to get it to about 4,000 rpm in neutral and slam it down into low gear. I had tried standing on the brakes at high RPM while in gear but I had more luck in neutral.

                              Anyway, this time there was a very loud clacking sound from the back end when I loaded up the rear end. I had broken off a gear in the differential. A new ring and pinion set was $850 (and that was back in 1957) which was not an option for either me or my dad.

                              We filled the diff with the heaviest weight oil we could find a mixed in a little sawdust. it quieted the rear end down sufficiently so that when we visited the Plymouth dealer to look at the new '57 models the Century passed their test drive with ease. My dad only owned the Buick for less than a year. The new plymouth had a 313 CI engine that I think was used in the Fury (we had a Belvedere) and that sucker was very quick.

                              I still feel bad about loading the Century off that way but not as much as I used to.

                              PS.... I have laid rubber with my 'Bird and Julie was my witness at Pappasito's last year.
