55 Buicks used the Dynaflow trans. Somewhat similar to today's CVT transmissions.
The Olds used the more common Hydramatic. Four speed Hydramatics (4th gear was 1:1, not overdrive) were very quick off the line, while the Buick needed the "rev high/drop into gear" process to get moving.
In a dead stop drag, my money's on the Olds.
My dad had a 55 Olds 88 Hydramatic, while I had a 54 Olds 88 three speed on the column. His car would have destroyed mine. Impossible to speed shift my three speed trans without grinding gears.
I also had a 57 Olds 98 convt with the Jetaway trans. 1/2 and 3/4 were good hard shifts. 2/3 was sloppy.
I sold the Olds and bought a 57 BelAir, 283, power pack three speed Hurst. I was gun shy to rev her and drop the clutch from a standing start, but I did like to get her moving, go full throttle, and do a quick clutch in/out. Car would burn (one tire) for the length of the local diner, which was just about perfect to impress the guys.

While driving my mother in her new '66 Buick Electra Convert with the 401 ci 325 hp I inadvertantly left a good patch from a stop sign.
She looked at me a said
'Oh, you have that problem too!'
Yes, that car would lay a long strip just stomping on it, no need to rev and drop into gear.
