  • Topping Off Brake Fluid?

I received a flyer today from independent motor shop. In it one of the listed services was to top off the brake fluid.

Now I thought that the brake fluid level in the resevoir dropped slowly as the brake pads wore due to the fact that they must move further though ever so slight to put the needed pressure on the rotor to stop. I thought this to be normal operation.

Questions: Is there value here? Is topping off the fluid something that should be/needs to be done?

....I share your logic on this, Mike....If brake fluid needs topping off.....there is a problem....or a problem is being created....On my second set of brakes....no topping off required.....

In a word, yes. It is not unusual to loose a slight amount of brake fluid. Many reason for this but the point is that you will loose some over time. Now, if you loose a lot there is usually another issue that needs to be addressed sooner than later.

Topping off the fluid is very easy for the reservoir is translucent and the full point is clearly indicated. Just remove the cap and carefully pour until you hit the full mark. Bake fluid is nasty stuff and will strip paint in a heart beat so place protection on your fender before doing this. Brake fluid is fairly inexpensive and available at your local auto parts store.
