  • 1957 Time Capsule

Hey Dot, I know that you’re always on the lookout for magazine articles which mention the New Thunderbird. Perhaps this article is a bit earlier than you had in mind: The Saturday Evening Post, November 24, 1956 featuring: a showing of all of the 1957 Ford family of Fine Cars in a family portrait. The ad touts: "BOLD NEW WORLD ON WHEELS" which includes the all new 1957 Thunderbird, as the ad states: "One look at our 1957 cars and you'd think they had rolled right out of tomorrow."(How right-they-were, folks!) The Thunderbird pictured is probably the "Bronze" which seems to look a bit plumb-like, or perhaps they were foreseeing the "Merlot" of tomorrow?! FYI, this ad was found in a stack of random issues of the Saturday Evening Post, which my late grandfather saved between 1953 and 1960—he was the original “Lindy” and his first car was a 1915 Buick, which is when my family’s love affair with the automobile began.

Lindy, the "red" one is the bird (bottom right). The gold colored one is probably a Fairlane

Lindy, I think that TBird was probably supposed to be Red. My first car was a 1957 Mercury just like the one shown except for the color. The real rare collector car out of all of them I think is the Continental. I think in 58 they added the Edsel. Leroy

Leroy, take a look at the lower left corner of the two pages, that is a map naming all of the pictured "family" members. --Lindy

Lindy, I can't enlarge in enough to read it. What am I missing? Leroy

The black one on the left is the Lincoln "Mark 2 "('56 and '57 were same)

The one on the lower right, the red car, is positively a Tbird. Looks like my 57.

In 1956 & 1957 Ford had separate divisions for the Lincoln and Continental. The car is a Lincoln and not a Mark 2, only Continental’s are Mark 2’s. Mark 2’s have a continental bump in the trunk like the newer Lincoln Mark series.

Will have to search thru my ads to see if I have that one. Probably do but ad does not look familiar to me.

The Black car on left is the Continental Mark II. The T-bird in ad is Bronze as Lindy thought, not red.

What is interesting though is the trunk emblem on the Lincoln. It is very close to the trunk emblem on the Continental but a 6 point star instead of 4 point star found on the Continental.

That Continental is the real Classic of the bunch, Ford only made about 3000 of them and only 444 were 57s. The most expensive U.S car in 1957, alot of famous people owned them including Elvis. My Mercury Monteray was just like the one pictured except for were that one is Blue mine was a light green and I had TPC skirts on it. Leroy

                        Re: 1957 Time Capsule

Just an update: I finished looking through the other back-issues of the Saturday Evening POST that I have. Found two other ads that mention the Thunderbird in Ford's line up, and then I hit pay-dirt again, and found a different Ford family car portrait which definitely includes a bronze 57, and a white Continental. Perhaps I could have each professionally scanned, as they are rather large ads, and post here.

Dot, if you have any other ideas how that these could be shared, please send me a PM.
