  • I Cheated On My Bird

Yesterday was gorgeous in DC (as is today) and, as you may know, the hardtop is on the Bird. I uncovered the Rambler, gave it a wipe down, reattached the battey, and fired it up. Started right up with no drama. I folded the top and put the boot on and headed out to run errands.

I love the Bird, but . . . there's something about a good 1964 economy car. I had a great time out - kept thinking of places I needed to go to keep her out on the road a little longer. The Bird was still beautiful when I got home, but it was a real struggle to disconnect the battery and put the cover on the American.

I'm laughing, Sealy. She'll get even. Just ask Joe, caretaker of My Raven.

I don't know what it works out to in dog years or people years, but my pert little 46 year old can definately give my beautiful 6 year old a run for my affection. Just need to keep a look out for the green-eyed monster.

Very nice, Sealy...didn't the characters in 3rd Rock from the Sun ride in a little red American? (think it was an older year than yours, though)

Thanks! Theirs is generally accepted as being a 1963. I've seen a few advertised as being the actual car used. Interesting to note that the car was never shown actually moving or being driven. Some say that's the way they came from the factory, but I know better.

Nice Car. My dad had a 1960 Rambler Station wagon. I took my drivers test on it. It was a 3 speed on the column. Soon after I got my license I stripped the axle gears from trying to peel out with it. My dad never figured out why the axle stripped. Luckily it happened while he was driving it. It was a nice sturdy car though....I think back then it was one of the very few that had unibody construction.

                          Sealy:

I had a '64 American convertible just like yours only in blue.

I had continual problems with the throttle linkage where it connects to the carburetor. I took it to several mechanics but no one fixed it properly.

Ultimately, I sold it to our babysitter in 1974 for $250.

She wrecked it two weeks later. Total writeoff.

Rambler or the babysitter? It's amazing that for a small company that everyone jokes about, how many Rambler stories there are. I can't take my car anywhere that I don't get one or two people that remember when . . .
