My fuel pumb went out at 45,000 miles on my 2004 bird. The service manager, at Ford, said this is a common problem. Has anyone else had to replace their fuel pump?
Ed
Yes, Mine was replaced under my extended warranty at 57,000 miles in November. I'm getting tired of these pesky little problems that are more of a inconvenience than anything else. But I've never had a car with COP issues, a fuel pump at 57,000 miles, chrome peeling off the windshield header for the second time, faulty fuel guage, the leather is far inferior to any car I've ever had. I have not had a car that did not have leather since the 80's and the leather on my drivers seat is disgusting to my eyes, admitted I'm very particular about keeping my car pristine, that said, I've also been very diligent about keeping my leather clean and conditioned.
Great! Another problem to look forward to.
Although, I crossed my fingers when I bought mine as it had been an Avis rental car. So far, no problems of any kind. I bought it in late April, 2006. It now has 33,000 miles.
May I ask how much that fuel pump cost?
I recently replaced the fuel pump in the front tank of my 1996 F-150.
The pump alone was $270.

The fuel pump should not go out that soon. I have had two Ford products, one, a 1992 Lincoln Town Car, lost a fuel pump at 190,000 miles, and a '98 Merc. marquis, I sold with 180,000 miles, still had the original fuel pump. Pump is in the gas tank, and is cooled by the gasoline. I was asked by the Lincoln Service Tech if I ever drove it until the fuel tank was nearly empty. I answered, "All the time", because it would sound one auadible beep at 50 miles until empty, and 2 beeps at 25 miles until empty, then I would fill up. He said, Don't drive until it gets that empty, or it will shorten the life of the fuel pump, because there is no fuel to cool the fuel pump.
I wonder how many miles I could have gotten out of it if I had not driven until so empty for the 10 years. Sometimes things just go out, unfortunately.

This is the reason they quit having two tanks on pickups, people would run one tank empty and then switch to the second tank and this was very hard on fuel pumps!
Just wondering, are there any signs of the fuel pump going out? If so, what are they? Thank you for the help! Just want to be prepared if that should happen to our bird.
One thing that can ruin a fuel pump is if you use any gas with Ethanol or any gas additives with alcohal in them. It ruins the seals and gaskets. Leroy

Typically it is like running out of gas. You start the car and it will not stay started and / or you are driving and it feels like there is no go when you give the car gas.
