  • Radar detectors in Ontario?

Maybe one of our Canadian TBNers can provide some information.

My Passport sits on the left side of my dash and is hard-wired to the car. In the past when I have crossed into Virginia and/or Ontario I have always disconnected it and packed it away in the glove box.

Since I will be heading north again this year I wonder if all this is necessary. I read where the law in Virginia states that they can confiscate the detector even if it is not turned on but that has been challenged and the cops cannot ticket you or take it away unless it is turned on.

What is the deal in Canada? Do I have to hide it or can I just turn it off and leave it in place?

Same deal in Ontario, Ray. I have mine high on the windshield sort of hidden by the heavy tint at the top. It too is hardwired in, but can be removed. easily.

Last time I was in Toronto I left it connected because it also tells me about red light cameras. I figured I could use that as an excuse because that is not illegal. Probably not worth taking the chance though, and I'll most likely remove it when I cross the Border next time.

It is illegal to have in your car in Ontario whether it is hooked up or not. Also Ontario police have a detector to detect radar detectors in your car.

Here is the answer to that.
Today, practically every radar detector on the market is immune to the VG-2 Interceptor. The Spectre III detected almost every radar detector certified for operation in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission as of December 2004. However counter technology has evolved rapidly, so that by July 2008, even budget radar detectors were able to avoid detection by the device.

While I would not recommend using a detector in Ontario, on a personal level, I use mine. I have been all through Ontario at least 6 times with my detector on and have never had any indication of being detected.

That's right, it is a cat and mouse with any technology...

and it don't stop companies selling them here in Canada...

Bottom line is that detectors are illegal whether hooked up or not if you get caught...

I have read cop blogs that explain how they determine if someone has a radar detector. They will sneak up behind you in their unmarked car, maybe a ways back. The cop will hit his radar, which sets off your detector. The natural response is for the person to hit their brakes. Bingo.. your speeding, and you just verified you have a detector. Probable cause. Sneaky!

My best advice......leave it at home and drive just under 10 miles per over the limit they will usually let that slide unless the traffic is heavy and you weaving in and out or passing on the right.

Plus like most State Troopers they love foreign plates especially ones doing 15 miles+ per hour over the limit. Gunna get my quota cover today!!!

Now if only I could take my own advice! But that is why our RetroBirds have cruise control! RIGHT?

Drive it like you stole it !!!
