  • Starting Problems

Well, I thought I'd check out the site while I was waiting for my battery to charge (yet again).
The current scenario is that I hadn't driven the car in three days. In the winter, that's enough for me to need to jump start. Sigh.
I'm noticing that she's cranking and cranking - making that vacuum whirring sound - but not turning over. After five secs or so the tach and speedo go back to zero.
I've had the fuel pump replaced once already and hope I don't have to have another one. Maybe the starter is on its last legs? Who knows! I figure these cars just weren't meant to be really driven! I'm just coming up to 120K miles and this is my daily driver.
Oh well, guess I should go back outside and see what happens.

      Re: Starting Problems

Well I'm leaning toward the battery but will start doing some starter pricing. After the charge, It took awhile for her to start up. If the car was carburated, I would have thought it was just a lack of fuel getting into the carb from sitting so long. I know when I start my 69 Dodge after sitting I have to do alot of pump pump pump of the pedal to get the fuel from the tank to the engine, but we practically sit on the gas tank in these cars and they're EFI to boot.
I guess the worst part of this experience was having the collection of SNOW in my trunk.

Sounds like you need a new battery, since it does not hold a charge.

Get the correct Motorcraft battery from your Ford dealer, with the vent tube. That's the only one that works properly in the space under the trunk.

Has the fuel filter been changed?

I agree with Jerry, you need a new battery if it is loosing its charge after 3 days. And with 120K miles you are lucky.

              Re: Starting Problems

Any auto shop should be able to put a load test on the battery and tell you if it's any good .They can also check the starter the same way.

Our 4000 mile 2002 Thunderbird got a new battery around Thanksgiving and it won't start although it turn over just fine. The garage was cold but it's never seen rain or a wet street. Stale gas?
