Re: Where did you cruise in your youth?

Grew up in Anamosa IA. High School years from 76-79. Typical small town Iowa, pop. about 3000. One stop sign. No traffic light until my senior year.

Drove a couple of cars, but the most interesting was Dad's 28 Model "A". Bight yellow body with brown fenders. Also had the "rumble seat" for extra passengers. Only one in town so everybody knew who I was.

Had a 2 mile strip we drove up and down through town. Blew gallons and gallons of gas cruising. We also had a state park at one end of town that could double our milage so of course we had to drive through there every so often.

The other cars were a Pacer Wagon with the faux wood grain side panels and once in a blue moon I would get to drive Dad's Jag. It was a four door sedan a XJ6 model but it still was the only Jag in town.

    Seems so far away now.

In Homewood Illinois it was the Dixie Highway and everybody met at Dog-n-Suds (carhops were great). Also met at J&B Pizza. Drove my father's Fords then (gold Galaxie 500) and my sisters red Fairlane. A lot of my "cruising" was with Sue as I met her when I was a junior and she was a sophomore in high school typing class.

I never had my "own" car until I married Sue and she brought her 1968 Mustang into the marriage (1970). The first car we ever bought together was a Torch Red 1972 Gran Torino (sport, I think) with a black vinyl top; I was a junior in dental school.

Seems like a really long time ago.

I was in Amarillo during the cruising days. We would follow a loop up and down Polk street, then make a pass through the Hi-D-Ho drive in then farther west to Stanley's Drive in. Good times. $5.00 dollar nights. $1.00 worth of gas, $3.00 for cokes and burgers and still have a dollar in my pocket by bed time.

I grew up in Monroe NC and we cruised between the Dairy Mart and Hill Top resturant. Lots of fast cars and Lots of dragracing. We had a strip on Hwy 74, that was 4 lane. We raced from a steet crossing in front of the Dairy Mart to a bridge where US 601 crossed 74 almost 1/4 mile exactly. The good old days.

Been cruisin since 1960, in Winnipeg Canada. Had a 58 Impala Conv. Our favourite cruise was to the A&W for a root beer and a burger, oh yeh also to hustle up the young car hops. Met some real fine gals there....
Still curisin after all these years.
                    Cheers, Jim..........Cruise on........

Those of us who were teenagers in 50's' and early sixties lived in the greatest period of time in the history of the world. In Orlando in 50's we mostly cruised Colonial drive and hung out at Pig and Whistle " the pig", In 60's we had 3 Steak and shakes and we spent hours cruising from one to other. One was just inside winter Park where they hated loud pipes. All Fords had them so we would come in quiet and raise hell leaving for Orlando only 3 blocks away. I still had 17 tickets for loud mufflers Guys with flat head fords would pull choke out half way and it sounded like a big cam when you idled thru the drive ins

You could cruise all of Coshocton for a week on a gallon of gas.

We cruised Fulton Street in downtown Fresno, before the city decided to turn into a mall, which was a total flop. The street ran about 12 blocks with four lanes and was packed. When we got hungry we would cruise out about 2 miles to the Mars drive in, which cooked burgers like I've never tasted since. It's a real shame, that as popular as that place was, there are no known photgraphs of it. None of that is allowed anymore because of all the gang violence. If anyone tries to have fun, someone else will try to prevent it. I think Modesto still has the annual cruise day and American Graffiti night once a year.

In November of 1956, does anyone remember that long ago? I was crusing 2nd Street in Pomona, Ca. Who should jump into my girlfirends car at a stop sign, Gene & and his friend Jimmy. Gene had a new 56 - black T-Bird. Need I say more. Our 53rd anniv. Was January 4th 2010. T-Birds forever.
