Local dealer got out of replacing 3 failed cops by indicating they had been contaminated by oil. I replaced all eight including the 3 in question. No oil contamination at all. NONE! Tech's didn't even remove the covers. Simply read the diag codes and took the lazy way out. In the end I saved $1500 by reading tech posts here and doing the work myself. Piece of cake. Runs like a dream.

Re: 2004 COPS oil contamination - what a jip!!
When your car breaks, you've got to fix it. Whether you buy a Ford or any other brand, most new car warranties typically don't exceed 36 months (which is a big improvement over the standard 12 month 12,000 mile warranty you used to get years ago).
I think we have to realize that these Thunderbirds are now 5-8 year old cars. A few have been on the road close to 9 years now. So you're bound to have to deal with some maintenance issues going forward.

R&dee,
Reading thru that cops letter, you're right about Ford only covering the cops themselves on the 04s/05s if they go bad. Sure sounds to me like yours went bad. but in order to fix what may have caused them to go bad, it requires replacing the o-ring seals in the heads which it doesn't appear that Ford is covering.
That led me to the coil poll on this site and I only found one other 2004 that had listed oil contamination with their bad coils. Don't know when that happened to that member. MIght be worth it to check with him though he may have lucked out and still been under warranty. You might check to see when his tbird had been built and compare it to the date on yours.Limited Edition databases for 007 msg..#26 , PCR sticky, and Cashmere msg.#64

I'm also going to add this. Please, take the c.o.p. poll
http://www.thunderbirdnest.com/forum...ad.php?t=19993
It's our forum's only way knowing what is happening and how frequently with these cars in regards to the c.o.p.s.
I can already see that there have been some water contamination issues with 04s in just a quick check of a few of the poll takers. I know that there is an 05 with plenty of water comtamination issues.Last edited by 5bird7; Mar 5, 2010, 10:40 AM.Limited Edition databases for 007 msg..#26 , PCR sticky, and Cashmere msg.#64

Re: 2004 COPS oil contamination - what a jip!!
Greg is right ... I'e had mine since October 2001, so it is over 9 years old now. I think I've spent about $2000 on unexpected mainenance over the years, apart from tires and brakes and normal wear items. That equates to less than $250/year or just over $300 for non-warranty years (the last 6). To me, that is pretty cheap driving and it ccertainly has been the most fun.Unbelivable TBN trips including ALL of the lower 48 States plus 9 Canadian Provinces, 8 European Countries, 3 Caribbean Countries, Countless National Parks and have attended well over 100 TBN Events since 2001 and counting. Mine just turned 90K, but now it mostly sits in the garage. I have a 99 volvo with 207 thousand miles and I have had no COP problems with it. this is just a problem with these cars and ford didn't stand behind them to fix the problem. only in this case our cars want race down the road and kill us . and that is the only reason why ford want fix them. they dodge the isssue and didnt fix the problem. same thing with leaks around windows, sensors for the abs, cops, bushings wearing out with low miles and the transmission with the big ole E its all on here . just read it on here You have every reason to be upset and you need to tell ford about it.

Re: 2004 COPS oil contamination - what a jip!!
I may be wrong, but I don't think 99 Volvos have cops.
Ford has warranted cops for 2003-05 TBirds. It is just the 2002's that are out in the cold. As for the otehr problems, the cars are out of factory warranty due to their age. So, unless you purchased an extended plan, what or even why to you think Ford is responsible?
Try getting your 99 Volvo fixed under warranty. AINT GONNA HAPPEN!
One more thing .. name 1 car, ANY car that has never had a problem in 8-9 years. THERE ARE NONE!!!

Re: 2004 COPS oil contamination - what a jip!!
Just came back from my dealer. He was checking a "service parking brake" message on my 2004 Lincoln LS8 Sport message center.
Unfortunately, the message had cleared itself, so he told me to bring it back if/when the light returned.
One possible reason for the light, according to the service manager, is RF interference from a COP (???????????????).
Wish the LS had the Bird's manual parking brake.Last edited by jerrym3; Mar 8, 2010, 08:50 AM.2010 Explorer Limited Edition, tri color white, camel interior

R&Dee:
I'm with DavidA.
It is not Ford's problem... it is your problem.
Your '04 is now six year's old... maybe even seven in car years since some 2011 models have already been released.
A six year old car is going to have problems and I don't know of any maker back in '04 who warranted a car much longer than 36/36. At the time the car was new a 36,000 mile or 36 month warranty was normal except Ford went the extra mile (or in the case of 03-05 models), the extra 64,000 miles on the COPS and I think that is more than fair.
Sorry if I sound curt but I really get tired of these types of complaints.
These are machines and machines get old, tired and worn out... some even have a few manufacturing defects from time to time.
I replaced all eight of my coil packs and have moved on.

I agree with Bronzebird. Ford made a commitment to each one of us who bought new that the cars would be corrected of any defect within in 3 years or 36,000 miles whichever occurs first. They never said that they would babysit these cars or any other cars they have made until the wheels rust from underneath them. It is a mechanical machine and like any other mechanical machine with use parts will break & wear out.02 Bird yelo/yelo full accent
