  • 1956 window sticker

Just as info, and some may be interested, below is a scan of my original window sticker from my '56 TBird. At least that's what I believe it is.
It's from Ford Dearborn and has the vin, which I guess would have a color code in it. It was Fiesta Red
Sold it in 2000 when I ordered my 2002. Lost track of the buyer and then found this and tried to send it to the new owner, but could not find them.
BTW, it was originally sold from Hollywood, FL and I believe I we have members from there as well. Wonder if the dealer is still there??

interesting I put this in an online inflation calculator, results.

What cost $3236.98 in 1955 would cost $25645.62 in 2009.
Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2009 and 1955,
they would cost you $3236.98 and $408.57 respectively.

Then I did a reverse with the cost of my 2002 Bird, results.

What cost $39000 in 2002 would cost $5836.60 in 1955.
Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 1955 and 2002,
they would cost you $39000 and $253471.06 respectively.

So our new Bird would be twice as much as a 1955 in the same year.

Actually, George, that's the factory invoice that your 56 tbird's dealer received a copy of when he "bought" the car from Ford. It's not the price the original owner paid as the dealer added his own mark-up. The factory invoice is a piece of paper that rarely any of us ever see unless we're a Ford dealer. Window stickers showing dealer's invoice didn't start appearing on Ford cars at dealerships until 1958 or 1959 (can't remember exactly).

One of the very few things we saved when we "bought" our '57 station wagon from my parents is the dealer's invoice for that car. Both the factory invoice for our tbird and the dealer invoice for the wagon are very interesting items to read.

Must be the price of the electronics in ours plus all the added safety features and engineering.

Hollywood Ford maybe Pines L/M -Ford now. In '56 Hollywood may have taken a large area which may have been divided into new towns.

            Mike: Interesting calculations..Thanks

Dot: Factory invoice, Thanks... So that could be valuable to the owner, if I could ever find them. I did put a note in Don Seymours news letter to New England Thunderbirds but either the cars not in NE or the owner is not in the TBird club.

The new owner may be a member of the CTCI and they may have his/her '56 VIN in their registry. I am not a member of that organization so don't know who the secretary or cantact would be but George or Dot may be members since they own a '57.

The factory invoice is a nice item to have and brings up memories of Lois Eminger who worked for Ford and she had the fore-sight to get hold of all those 'factory invoices' before they went to the "G" file. We have one for our '66 conv. but not the '58. Did get a copy for the '03 from the dealer but nothing like the old ones.

This 56 was built on 5 November 55 with a delivery point of Jacksonville Fla. Dot's makes a good point my 56 invoice had a $3232.00 total but the bill of sale from Cannon Motor in Seaford, DE was marked up to $4,003.00 for all the "Stuff" they added on undercoating, radio...etc.

CTCI doesn't have a registry of their members cars, but one can go to tbirdregistry.com and see if that vin # has been entered there.
or query the classictbird yahoo group (you have to get on it thru tbird.org) if anyone knows it's whereabouts (I can do that).

Thank you George, a thing of great interest to share here.

As far as the comments on price; OK so it is an invoice to the dealer before the retail mark-up. Another factor to consider when comparing prices between the 50's cars and those of the 21st century is the WARRANTY. With today's long and broad warranty coverage, this is a great factor in pricing a car in the industry. Take for instance, a new Cadillac, how might such a car be priced if there were almost no warranty? Anybody know what a warranty was like (if any) on a 1955 Thunderbird? With out such info, all we have is a proverbial "apples to oranges" comparison as far as gauging prices (then and now) and inflation are concerned.

My father bought a new '52 Ford and a friend bought a new '58 Ford and both had a 12/12 warrantee. It didn't cover a whole lot that I recall. Mostly fit and finish for 3 months and hard parts for the remainder. Although Ford did cough up a new head for the '52 Ford in 1960, the original was a bad casting.
We had a neighbor buy a new '57 T-Bird, but I don't know what it had for a warrantee, but probably 12/12.

Since I heard that a top from any year fits any other year for our birds, I would like to buy a couple at that $202.50 price!

yes, power windows and power seats were options on the 1955 thru 1957 years along with power brakes and power steering. It put the 55 tbird way ahead of the Corvette.

Hollywood Ford used to be on Federal Hwy just North of Young Circle. The building is still there I'm just not sure what the current use is. I wonder if that 37.8 cents a gallon gas .was premium
