  • They're All Mine Now!

Whoo Hoo! They're all mine now.

My grey 03 Thunderbird has been paid off for a couple years, and now the 05 inca gold Thunderbird is paid off too. I bought that one used in 2008 and financed it on a 60 month loan but got it paid off in 22 months in spite of this crappy economy. Just wanted to share my small victory especially since I managed to do it while getting by on temporary contract IT jobs for the past year.

No, not working for TonyV. I'm helping the FDIC with the computer systems for failed banks. While I'm grateful for the work, I've taken about a 35% cut in pay. I've just been living very frugally for the past year or so and took a few dollars out of savings as well to get this car paid off. I figured I was better off saving the interest expense on the loan especially since the savings account was paying next to nothing on my deposit.

My wife and I also got her Mercedes and some credit cards she had paid off too in the last couple of months. So other than our mortgage, we don't owe anyone anything. That's rather comforting as I expect my current engagement with the FDIC will probably end in June and at least we'll be able to get by fairly easily on her salary and what I'll get in unemployment benefits.

Congrats Greg - that must be a huge weight off your shoulders. I think of you often and hope that all is going well. I hope that your current employer is allowed to give you references, as you interview for new roles - the length of time you have been retained there will be viewed as a huge strength. It is a huge testament to you as an asset. That right role will come to you.

According to some news accounts, there may be another wave of failing banks, so keep your ear to the ground where you work. Best of luck. I paid cash for my 2002 because I could not see putting money into home improvements that will not help the value of my house here in the suberbs of Detroit. At current prices, my car is now more valuable than my house (the house across the street went for $17,000).

                          Re: They're All Mine Now!

Thanks Vickie. I appreciate the words of encouragement.

Ed, I'm definitely trying to line up more contract work with the FDIC. Nevada's #2 in unemployment, behind Michigan, so there isn't much work here. So far, the FDIC has treated me decently. I started doing this IT work for 1 bank back in March 2009. Now I'm handling the systems for 4 banks and will be taking over the systems for a 5th bank 2 weeks from now. Back in September, I became medically disabled for 2 months and thought that was the end of my work with them. However, they were telling me they needed my skills, take whatever time off I needed to recover, and that there would be a job waiting for me. I went back to doing contract work for them again in November. The FDIC closed 140 banks last year and expect this year to be even worse so I'm hopeful that maybe they'll keep me working.

Congratulations Greg. That was a smart move paying off all your debt (other than the home) in this economy. That should give you a lot of peace of mind.
