So... I'm really not sure why I'm posting this... but I just thought it would be a really good thread. The T-Bird really need to get out and be exercised due to the long, hard, snowy winter we have had recently. All previous records were broken (71" snow at my home, over the course of a few weeks)
I was traveling back home from the Baltimore MD area down I-95 and 495 to the Washington DC Metro area. It was pitch dark, about 8 pm. Traffic was INSANE!! Bumper to bumper, all 4 lanes going south. Speed moved briskly between 70 and 85 mph. Police cars were like lions on the side of the highway, lights flashing, writing tickets, traffic never even bothered to slow down. It was like Wild Kingdom... when the lions were feeding on a weak Gazelle, it becomes a free for all for the prey.
Cars were zizzing, swerving in and out of lanes, passing me like I was sitting still. In the far left lane cars in front of me were going around tight sweeping curves in excess of 85 and 90 MPH.
The thing that I immediately noticed were that a lot of trucks, SUVs, cute utes, and vans were wobbling and exhibiting massive "body roll" around the curves, and when cutting from lane to lane at those speeds. Even some care makers, like Kia, Hyundai, Civics and other 4 door cars were clearly unstable.
The T-Bird drove like it was on magnetic rails. The speed was steady and controllable. No body flex or roll was evident. And when I needed to get around someone, I had more than enough torque, even at high speed, to power around any auto. The suspension was very settled, even on a road that had "washboard" surface in curves.
I fully understand that the T-Bird is NOT a proper sports car. I look at it as fully capably sport touring car, which is why I bought it over all other cars. But man... this car is way more capable than most people would give it credit.
I just wish that other people would slow down a bit... particularly the "boy racers" in their econobox cars with big wings bolted onto them. It's no wonder there are multiple wipe-outs on the Interstates here very single night.
