Where best to store the hard top? In the "air" on the hoist or is it best to lower the top and place it on the stand? Iguees it's obvious that I'm new to this...

Mine is 'in the air'. It leaves more space in the garage and there's no danger of it getting hit, falling over, or otherwise dinged. JMO.

Except by an unsuspecting head, as I've bumped mine several times. I've thought about relocating the system to the attic space above the sheetrock so the top will hang about a foot higher.

Bob - I had similar questions recently and posted a poll. It might help you get a feel what most people do with their top.

I'm sure all of the following come into play - $$, space available, headroom, and there were a good number that have a hoist but haven't installed it (so time?).

I store in the air and have added a couple of golf towels --one on each side to prevent the head ache problem-- of course that was after my wife walked into it!!!.

Mine is in the air, on a hoist, first I drape a sheet over the top, then hoist it up, and wrap the sheet under it, and pin it all around the edges, so it totally encases the top.
