  • Stamped ID number?

Does anyone know if our T-bird has factory stamped ID number on the frame? I can't find any. The reason I ask is I'm shipping my car to European vacation and they won't insure any cars without it. The US plate at the window is not enough nor are DOT/EPA stickers.
I asked if CHP would do stamping, they said NO. They use stickers, too. But they said "it's fully legal if YOU do it".

First of all, I beleive these cars are "uni-body" construction so there is no frame to speak of. These cars are sold and shipped to Europe second hand and no such requirement. Also, they build cars new for export and all are I.D.'d in /on the top of dash. At least Ford does it that way. Check with some other insurance companies.
Last resort, go to an Industrial hardware store and get some "alpha" "Numeric" stamping sets for metal and punch in your I.D.

      Hi Topi,
I drive a T-Bird in NL and I do not know of such requirement. My car has the usual VIN in the place where it is like in yours.
But to make sure I will check tomorrow with my dealer, they do import from US all the time.

Where and when will you be in Europe btw. We might be able to meet. Would be fun having a small gathering.

Just checked my Dutch title of the Bird and on that it says VIN is stamped underneath the hood on the right side spring compartment. Not sure if it is always there. if not it must have been added as extra.

I am sure that if there is a number stamped on the frame that the CHP will know where it is. There was a story about a year or two ago about a man in Palo Alto who got a call from Southern California about his '56 (or so) Tbird that had been stolen 20-25 years ago. It had been around several places and recently purchased by a person in Southern California from out of state. When she went to register it, the numbers didn't seem right. They sent her to their expert who knew where the body numbers were. Seems like the expert was in the western end of the San Fernando Valley.

Hi! This is the recommended EU location. It's not there by the factory. I'll do the same.
My car will go to Gothenburg or Helsinki dep on the price. From there I plan to cruise to Germany and maybe to Spain via France. I already worry if it gets stolen. My LoJack won't help there :(

That is quite a trip you are making. Don't worry too much about it getting stolen. Most popular car for theft is the VW Golf. Our Birds are just to rare and obvious.

We have a member on TBN from Gothenburg, Björn (TBN name Agneta) he might be able to help you out with info on shipping and so.
