    Re: Hard Top Question

Well I done it! I bought the black hardtop that was for sale on E-Bay in Charlotte. I'm going to pick it up next Friday. But I've never seen a hardtop and I don't think my bird has either. Read the thread on adjusting the front screws understand that, but are there C clamps or locks of some sort fasten to the top or should I buy some before going down? Kinda like the boy scout in me " be prepared". Pretty excited about this as it completes the bird as it should have been

      Re: Hard Top Question

You'll want to contact the seller to ensure that they have the hardtop wrench that came with the top. That is what you use to tighten down the screws. If they don't have it there is a generic replacement that you can buy and take with you. If you do a search here you should be able to find the part number. Otherwise, I am sure that one of the guys will chime in.

But you have to have a wrench tool to tighten down the hard top.

        Re: Hard Top Question

Art, Here's my advice. First, does the top come with the T handle tool that tightens the two front screws down. If not you need to go to a hardware store an get a TORX size 40 tool with about a 4" shaft. That's the only tool you need. If you have to adjust the front mounting blocks to line up the screws, this is also the tool you will need. Be real careful removing the header molding on the top to get to the blocks, it's kind of flimsy and just pulls off. Take a roll of masking tape too. Put about 3/8" of tape all along the edge around the rear deck from door to door to protect the paint were the tops weather stripping seals. When you set the top on the car make sure you get both rear pins into the locks, you'll know they're in right if when you move the levers inside the car they pull the top down. Next get the front lined up and get the screws started. When you are satisfied everything is started tighten the front down and then lock the rear handles. Run and reset the power windows and that's about it. Hopefully the person selling the top can help you also. Good Luck. Leroy

            Re: Hard Top Question

I'll piggy-back a question to this post since it is related and might be something that Art should check.

One of the front screws in my car does not stay fixed in it's header location. It will fall out when not engaged in the hardtop, so it gets stored in the glovebox when the top is off. I'm not sure if it is a replacement screw or is there something missing that retains the screw in the header? I'd like to fix/replace it if possible. Thanks!

Art: You should verify that the two screws on each side of the windshield header are present before you pickup the hardtop.

Thanks Leroy and friends! as usual a wealth of information I think I'll proceed out to the barn and make sure I've got a forty socket. I'd bet money the seller does not have one or he'd have said so however he does have the stand and that's a plus. BTW I did find a cd this morning in the owner's manual which is very informative

I'm 5'9" and hit my head getting in with the hard top on. The remedy was to lower the seat or chop your head off.

                  Re: Hard Top Question

Art, It is NOT a socket you need. It is a #40 Torx bit that is at least 4 inches
long. The torx head screws are recessed into the HT's lead edge where it is fasten to the windshield frame.

If you do not find one easily look at Sears, a Craftsman #41477 Torx Tool. It's the same without the TBird logo.
