  • COP Symptoms?

I've been working on the Bird and it finally drives like it should (neglect from previous owner)The question is what does it feel like when the Cop's are acting up?I've read many post and it seems it can be pretty apparent when really running rough.I just started to notice that mine has a little hesitation and not as smooth at low speeds,on the open road it's fine.
I know it's not enough to store a code and i'm wondering if I should just change them all at once because I don't want the back and forth with the dealer, plus I can do it myself.Any advice?

PS-I changed fuel filter,EGR valve, air filter, cabin filter and all or most undercarriage bushings due to dry rot.

Mine was just a brief hesitation pulling out from stop lights. It is tough to tell when a V-8 is running rough at idle unless things are really bad, it might have had a little hesitation. I took it into the dealer with that symptom to see what they could find and they changed out the COPS under the additional warranty

Put the car into fifth gear on a slight incline and keep the rpm level around 1,800-2,200. If a coil pack is weak you will feel a very slight hesitation that may not even register on the tachometer. It is just a little kick back.

If you want to make it worse pull down into 2nd gear and kick it up to 4,000-5,000 rpm and hold it there. Do this enough times and the weak pack will fail (or begin to fail).

You do not need to have the check engine light on to have the dealer make the warranty replacement on 03-05 cars with under 100,000 on the clock. The hesitation should be evident when they download the engine history.

I did not want to go through the dealer stuff that often so after two coil packs failed I replaced them all with Borg Warner coils myself.

Thanks for the feed back,I will ask the Dealer to replace them all if I get the run around (only one dealer on Island) I will probably do them all myself.

Chances are they will only replace failing coils at THEIR cost. The ones you want to replace before they fail will be at yours.

Don't they have a stress test to determine if the COPS are bad? Does anyone know how they do it? John
