  • Paint mess after removing Mylar strips

When I was in New Orleans at Roger's and Bonnie's Jazz TBN meet I purchased head rest and visor covers from Bunny Lou. Lou was also nice enough to give me some detailing advice. One of the things he told me to do was remove the factory supplied Mylar strips that I installed two years ago to protect the paint when the hard top was on. What he didn't tell me was the mess I would have after removing the strips.

I just spent several hours and a lot of elbow grease removing the adhesive residue from the paint. I used a combination of Meguiar's Deep Crystal Car Wash, full strength, and Meguiar's deep Crystal Polish.

I then used Meguiar's Ultimate Quik Detailer, which Lou's called "The Elixir of Life", to finish off the polish.

Of course I thought Lou was referring to "The Elixir of Life" as being good to protect the life of the paint on the car. However, at dinner that night I spied Lou putting a spritz of Meguiar's Detailer in his scotch. Now, I'm not sure if he was referring to his life or the paint's life.
Sorry Lou if I'm mistaken - it could have been bourbon instead of scotch.

Thanks for all the help Lou.

I have had good luck and less elbow grease using Meguiar's Scratch-X.

I am not sure about the spritz of Detailer in one's alcoholic drink. What is in that stuff???

I didn't like the way those mylar strips came off myself. Left an outline of the strip in spots. I just pulled them off on a warm day. Is there is a special way they are supposed to be removed? Didn't use any strips this year and had no problems, but only did a small amount of driving with the top off.

Personally, I've always felt the mylar strips looked horrible and were more hassle than they were worth. For the vast majority of the past 7 years, I've used nothing as I wasn't too impressed with them. So far I've seen no real issue with scratching or marring the painted surface and I keep the hardtops on my cars the majority of the time.

.....I'm with you, Greg.....It's been 7 years now, as a daily driver...hardtop on in winter....chaffing hasn't changed....very slight....maybe the colour?....It's getting too old to worry about now frankly....

I've had good luck with good quality masking tape put on about 3/8" along the edge of the rear deck were the top seals. It protects the paint and pulls right off. Leroy

                  Leroy,
I like that idea. I'm going to try it this Fall when I put the HT back on. I've been using the open cell weather striping foam seal that has been so popular on this subject. But the masking tape may work for me too. Heck it certainly is worth a try.

Lighter fluid should take mylar goo off.

I friend just told me at yesterdays Lady Thunder Cruise in FL that he uses black electrical tape and it works great and is flexible for rounding the corners.
