  • warped cowl - warrantied?

I have recently discovered that the cowl on my car has warped as in this thread: http://www.thunderbirdnest.com/forum...266#post351266

Went to the local ford/mercury dealership where I was informed that the cowl warping would not cause the cop failures as stated in the above thread, that a new cowl starts around $600 for the piece, and that the extended warranty did not cover this repair.

    A few questions:
    1. What are other users experiences with warped cowls?
    2. Will this lead to cop failure?
    3. Is my dealer correct on the extended warranty issue?
    4. Any way to prevent the warping of the cowl in the first place?

    Thanks for all your help,
    Kyle

Kyle, How warped is your cowl piece? If it's just showing a small gap where the rubber seal meets the windshield, it just may not be properly set in place. If that's the case, then un install it and locate all the clips underneath on the body. Make sure when you re install that all the clips are used.

I discovered my cowl piece was warped shortly after I purchased my '05 in May '08. Car was Ford Certified and dealer replaced cowl at no charge. No problems since!

I'll add this in to how there can be a gap showing at the windshield. When the cabin air filter is changed, the cowl piece will be partially or fully removed to get to it. When it's clipped back into place and a clip missed, is usually when that gap appears. Since the filter is "supposed" to be changed every 15,000 miles, this can happen if the filter installer is not careful.

Thanks for the replies - sorry with my late reply busy with work hard to find time to get online.
The cowl is definitely warped - I can see the bulge in it and the dealer has already taken a look at it. Have owned the car for close to a year now so am doubtful it will be covered with the ford certification. Will ask though, good idea. I was just thinking that since it sounds like a design/engineering flaw/weakness that it may have been an issue Ford previously adressed that I nor my dealer were aware of. That maybe Ford had designed a fix for the cowl which would prevent its warping.
For those who have purchased the cowl and replaced it themselves - does the dealer quote of $600 plus sound reasonable. He mentioned the cowl itself was very expensive.
          Thanks again for the comments,
          Kyle

When I got HAILBIRD in '04 the gap was causing a high speed flutter noise and not knowing about the problem I just siliconed it to the windshield, been good ever since and probably sealed out the water problem ???

The cowl can be easily removed and replaced by yourself. It simply unsnaps out of place after you remove the plastic push-in pins (By pressing the center dot area) and the new one snaps into place. A new cowl can be had from here at a much lower cost:

              Team Ford Parts

It is part 1 in the diagram.

JAB02LHS, that would of indeed fixed the water leak problem.

                thanks for part details

Thanks for the link - I had been looking at those diagrams and wasn't sure what piece was what - think I may just replace it on my own.
Thansk again for all the help -Kyle

I have seen GM cars that did that and we were able to correct it by adding another clip in the center of the bulge. GM door panel retainers work great for this. Remove the cowl and super glue the clip to the cowl. A little baking soda sprinkled on the glue heats it up and help it to stick. Once it is set, put a dab of grease on the tip of the clip and place the cowl in position. The grease will mark a spot where you can drill al hole for the clip to fit into. Drill the hole and snap the cowl back into place.
