Not a five and dime but how many of you guys were dragged to Robert Hall for clothes where you were young? Geez, I hated that place.

Where is this going to stop. My mother always took me to Robert Hall for my
Sunday go to meeting suit. Ediron you can elaborate on this as far as the
Robert Hall location in the Bronx where was it. I called my mother she tells
me it was down Fordham Road past Alexanders. Another Robert Hall story
here in Connecticut there was a Robert Hall store in Farmington. When it
shut down it became Tunxis Community College better known as Robert Hall
University.
P.S. Had to call mom as I could not remember she will be one hundred years
old July 11th.
In New York we referred to all of them as the five and tens. Never got a
whiff of the Ben Hur perfume. I don't know how many of you remember oil
cloth but when you walked by that department an odor you will never forget.
Ah - oil cloth! It was a required school supply item for kindergarten and 1st grade in the early 50's! I loved the smell of it and I've always associated it with the excitement of the new school year!

Coronado, CA, late 40's: "dime store". We had to decide how to spend our 25-cent weekly allowance. 15 cents for the Saturday matinee; the other dime went for refreshments there, or to the dime store. Smart-ass little sister would save her dimes for larger future shopping. Bet she could have bought her TBird new...

We're all Bozos on this bus.
John your mom has a great memory she was right on. Blue suits for Easter for sure. Alexanders ,my mom would go straight down to the basement for sales, she knew we were moving on up when she started to shop on the 1st & 2nd fl. Fordham Rd. was what a shopping mall is today.Alexander was at Fordham Rd. and Grand Concourse.
How about the perfume we all bought for our Moms, blue bottle, "Evening In Paris". Today I call it "Evening In An Ashcan"! Don't know how Mom was always so pleased with our gift!!!
Wow What a memory. Downtown was dominated by 5 and dime store, and family owned drug stores with fountains. In My Ohio home town all were on the square as well as the 3 movie theaters. Kresge's had the donut fryer right in side the door. Grants had the biggest candy counter and Woolworth's the most toy's. But Gallagher's drugstore had the best soda fountain. Hamburger and coke 30 cents. We could see a movie eat and buy something for a dollar including bus-fare. 'Course my dad made a whole $25.00 a week
Kresge's and Woolworths were here in the Detroit area when I was a kid. I remember being fasinated by the singing and the colors of the parakeets that were sold at both stores.
In California where I grew up we had Woolworth and Ben Franklins. I remember doing a lot of Christmas shopping at those two stores. My mother loved the Ben Hur perfume and that is what we bought for her. Oh my....did it smell, but Mom liked it.
I just googled Ben Hur and found a bottle of perfume for $25.00 and we bought it for .25
I also found out that they still make it.

THERE WAS STILL A WOOLWORTHS IN DETROIT, NEAR GROSSE POINTE, UP IN THE EIGHTIES.
Of course Woolworth went belly up years ago. Was just in Lesotho in southern Africa and there was still in business a Woolworth with about 1957 prices. They still exist in many of the old British Crown countries e.g. England is where it started.
