    Re: Woolworth

Well, we still have ice cream trucks! Wonder what the guy will do when I approach him with a nice, shiny nickel? Wonder if I can find a nickel?

most of those guys aren't real bright, I stopped at a little store the other day and gave the kid a susan b dollar he looked at it and said is this a real dollar? By the way Ted do you go to the greyhound tracks much? We go every winter to the one near Tampa. Is there any kind of system or just bet and pray with a tip sheet. My wifes says you have to look at the dogs but she doesn't do any better than me.

Remember how much patience the corner Mom & Pop stores had with us kids? We'd go in with our nickel and spend a long time deciding what penny candy we could buy. They'd put it in those very little brown paper bags for us. Then as we got older we'd collect lots of pop bottles to get enought bottle deposit money to buy an ice cream or soda pop. A better time methinks.

My old father-in-law had a fruit and veg. store on Freedman St. in The Bronx. He went to the market at 3:00a.m. for fresh items ,closed at 9:00p.m. went home to eat and sleep. Talk about tough times after being robbed the second time he closed up and moved to the North Bronx.

That's Molly in my avatar. She's our rescued retired racing greyhound. You can see more at http://w251.photobucket.com/pbwidget...2F35400858.pbw

As for betting, some folks joke that you should bet on the grey who just took a dump. Might be something to that. After doing so, Molly likes to erupt into blazing fast laps around the back yard.
In this avatar photo, she set a new record in the short sprint event at an annual gathering of 100+ rescued greys. 38 mph in 30 yards. Fastest non-grey clocked 24 mph.

Ed your always bringing up the Wedge Inn. I really wracked my brain this
time let me know if I'm close. For starters back then a wedge was a sub, hero
or (a la New England grinder). If I remember correctly sort of a truck stop
eatery. One thing that comes to mind are dishes of hot green peppers on the
counter. I'm thinking pepper and egg wedge was my favorite. I assume it was
in the Bronx but was up towards Westchester County on the Post Rd. Well Ed
that's the best I can do fill in some blanks for me,was a long time ago.

John you hit a home run that's the place.Well know by truckers on US1 .On a fri.or sat. night we would make a run to Fordham Rd. and pickup 1000 hero bread from the bakery and they would be gone by 6:00 a.m. What a business they had. When the new bridge went up on Boston rd. and 233st. it put them in a hole and a lot of the truck traffic went past. The place was remodeled and I don't know if it's still there today.Haven't gone by in about 5yrs.
