    Re: Renewing Plates in Iniana

We here in Michigan had to put up with emissions testing in the tri-county area for about 5 years but they discontinued the testing about 5 years ago. Thank goodness. It was a real PITA. We can renew plates by mail but new plates require a trip to the Secretary of State office which usually requires a minimum of one hour of wait time. The office near me has about 10 stations but they typically only have two operational at a time. Burns me up everytime as I sit and wait.

In Virginia we can renew on-line, and the notice is sent out 2 months in advance. State inspection is done annually in the month the car was originally purchased and has nothing to do with the DMV fees. The whole vehicle is inspected - not just emissions, and serves to keep clunkers off the road. Inspection fee is set by the Commonwealth at $16. Annual vehicle registration fees range from $47-$52 depending on weight (ex., T-Birds and Shelby are $47, my Expedition is $52). Now...don't even get me started on the annual personal property tax, which comes due the 5th of June each year...which, in Norfolk is $1.33 per $100 of value of each vehicle. That, along with real estate taxes make June a very pricey month in our household.

I agree with Elle. Our inspection in PA covers all of the vehicle and serves to make cars safer. You won't see cars driven legally with the fenders rotted off or without glass in the windows compared to states without good inspections. Inspection in PA runs from $25 and higher. No tax on vehicles except for yearly regisration starting at $36. We do pay 6% sales tax a time of purchase but not yearly.

Indiana has online registration, so there's no need to stand in line for routine registrations. Your emissions testing should be sent to BMV by the emissions testing facility as other states do, so you shouldn't have to go to BMV at all. Let us know how it works in Indiana.

When they send you the notice it will say whether you need a smog check or not. A little bit of computer work and you are done if no smog. A trip to the checker (about an hour if they are not busy) if a smog check is needed. After a week or so, the new sticker and registration card comes in the mail and you are set for another year.

Way back in '87 I got transferred to California and arrived with five vehicles in the household plus a horse and boat trailer. My wife almost had to revive me the day we went to change over to California registrations and the bill was something like $3,200 for all the vehicles. I got transferred to New Mexico the following year so I didn't get hit on this a second time. Do they still charge those exorbitant fees in California?

Here in this part of Georgia no emissions test is required and you can renew tags by mail. Like California, there is an annual tax on vehicles. The Ad Valorem (Latin for support the Governor's fishing programs), tax on my '05 'Bird this year was $309 but by the time I paid the tax on our other three cars, three motorcycles and two trailers it was over a thousand bucks!

Part of the registration fee you paid in CA was to bring vehicles in from another state. You would not have paid that same amount in years following. Now, for instance, a 2005 Thunderbird with a purchase price of $22,000 would cost about $1,100 coming from another state. Future registration fees would be around $300 and drop every year.

In Texas, a 2002 Thunderbird 2011 registration costs around $51.50 (Brazos Co.).

$557!! Leroy use my address in Ohio and cut your cost in half plus we stopped the emmision test a couple of years ago. Why is Indiana so hign they sold their toll rd they should be able to give their taxpayers a break! Do they go by car values or something? Man these goverments steal so much cash it's unbelieveable. Better stop ranting or I'll be branded as a radical

In Washington State we got rid of high tab fees several years ago, but they have stuck a fee based on weight of the vehicle. We can renew online with a credit card. Only a few counties require emissions testing. I know of people that live in those counties that have P.O. boxes in counties that don’t have testing’s so they don’t have to go in every few years.

I've got 28 years in government and I can still be civil and sympathetic. Even if I have to fake it.
Yes an apology is in order. Sometimes time slips away and S just happens.
Being on the other side of the desk in representing the King (Uncle Sam) I have been called every name in the book, spat upon, cursed out, threatened with bodily harm, but always kept my cool.
Now that I'm no longer in service to the King I can say strike back but perhaps I should not. All citizen have their right to voice their opinion just remember that civil servant on the other side of the desk is a taxpayer too. Since we've heard every excuse in the world we often become jaded. I leave with you two thoughts, taxes are price of democracy and the only deduction for stupidity is alimony.

If they ever had this in Florida (emission test and inspection )we would have about 60-75% less cars on the road. But than we would not only have illegal drivers but cars also with a lot of stolen plates

We used to have it in Florida. As much a PITA and farce as others have described above. Getting rid of it is something the state did right. (Careful, Ted. No politics.)

"taxes are price of democracy", May be true, but Government cannot produce, and therefore must confiscate. Taxes are one thing, but today, Usury fees are being tacked on to taxes above and beyond necessary, and are often used for other purposes, mainly they are just to increase government revenues. States that have inexpensive auto tag fees generally make up for it in your property taxes, or will have other taxes to make up for the lack of auto tag fees. Point is, they are going to get it, in one place or the other!

Taxes may be the price for democracy, but more recently we have fees that are accessed out of greed, and are essentially confiscatory in nature. Since government cannot produce, it must confiscate. Many license fees now are far out of line with what they were a few years ago, and the money generated is often used for purposes other than for which it was levied. States with less expensive tag fees will generally make up for that by having higher state Income tax, real estate taxes, personal property taxes, or other forms of tax.
Point is, they are going to get it....one way or the other. The only thing that matters is,
what is your total taxation on everything you have, versus what it might be in some other state or location.
