  • 1/8 mile times

My daughter's boyfreind and I went to the strip over the weekend. He drives a turbo miata 315hp at rear wheels me in my 03 bird. Paid the ten dollar fee and ran some test and tune runs. He spanked my bird with a best run of 9.13 secs.at 80.2mph, my bird's best was 10.4 secs. at 70.4 mph. Tried both manual shift and auto, due to no shift light either shifted to early or bumped the rev limit. Car is so quite can't shift by sound like back in the day. Still had a blast. Just wanted to know how fast it is with out having to worry about a ticket. Oh by the way best run was in auto shift.

I would suspect the auto-shift would provide better times. If your car is like mine there is a lag between shifts when using the select shift and that just defeats the purpose of having it IMHO.

...but I think the SST is a blast, any how! Just for sprinting around town.

I like the SST for the curves it's great downshifting, but still lags when used.

MoPar changed their automatics between 65 and '66 which gave a smoother shift but much hesitation if shifted by manual. My boddy at the time was the service manager and he had mine fixed and said it was simple. wonder if a change to birds could be made reasonably to get better manual shift

              Some Q's

did you have the traction control OFF?

When at the staging light, did you have the engine RPM up, to load up the torque converter and drive line while indrive with your other foot on the brake till the green light came on?

              Thanks,

XCAL program eliminates the lag in SST mode.

                  Re: 1/8 mile times

Speaking of XCAL, I have the SCT Xcal3 for my '05, However, I was disappointed with the one Thunderbird/Lincoln LS program that the device came with. It made little difference, and made the 2-to-3 shift go with an unruley stiff-"thunk," each time it shifted, despite my efforts to compensate by lowering the Shift Pres. Shortly after I began testing the program, an untimely transmission leak developed (posted about it elsewhere in this forum) possibly due to low mileage and in-activety. Much to my suprise, there was a mechanic at the Ford dealer where I had the x-mission serviced, who is their "go-to" man for any-thing like custom tunes. He knows a professional contact in Florida who has 30 years expierience and 20,000+ tunes under his belt. While he could not find any tunes yet written and proven on the dyno for my particular PCM, he was able to write two tunes (presumably 93 octane) which I am soon going to test. As I understand it, from other posts, yes, the SCT Xcal product is said to eliminate the lag in the SST. Will keep the forum posted about the results of the programs.

Yes loaded it one time and redlighted. Most other times just matted it. Traction control was off every time but once could realy tell the difference on take off. Was not tring to be too ruff on the bird didn't know how much the trans would take.

More details please. What kind of bike? 8.73 sounds like a full on drag bike.

yup, 1425 big block, 10" rear tire, the whole deal it was a full fledged drag bike. The wife and I ran around to a few different tracks in the late 80s/90s; we always a couple of bikes, the drag bike ran in the 8.90 sportsman class and use to go to the quick 8 at the local track in New Hampshire. Also had a great bracket bike, 1985 Kawasaki 900 Eliminator, ran 11.70s nice and consistent, it was water cooled so it was killer on a hot day. I was actually pretty good at the light, once upon a time. By the way, the big bike if we put someone weighing approx 125, it probably would have run in the high 8.30s, low 8.40s - at the time I was 225 lbs, 6 feet tall. O And it was a Suzuki

I cannot imagine riding that thing. I watched some Harley nitro bikes once and their front tire was about 6 inches off the ground (riding on the wheelie bar) for most of the quarter.

                            Not me brother.
