  • Bad coils and only 10,000 miles.

So my 'service engine' light came on last week. My car was jerking back and forth while the engine was on. And it had a hard time accelerating. So the next day, I took it to a Ford dealer. Turns out that coil assemblies 7 and 8 at the cylinder were bad. I asked the serviceman, "how could they go bad with just 10,000 miles" (10,400 to be more precise). He says "because it's an '03." I'm thinking, "so my car can go to crap, sitting in my garage for most of the year?" Very disappointing. I was 1 year out of warranty. 2 coil assemblies cost $204. $434 total with labor. And it is noted on the bill that quote "vehicle has 6 other coils that can go bad." I guess they're telling me to brace myself.

Ford covers COP repair costs for 2003-2005 models, search for the letter here on TBN to take to your dealer for a refund. They should not have charged you. As for us 2002 owners, we're SOL.

You may want to take a copy of the letter with you. Even though it should be on their OASIS system.
You'll find it doing a search on COPS.

As everyone says it's covered and find another dealer.I wouldn't be to happy with a dealer who just racked me for over $400 . One other thing this is a good reason to drive the Bird.

I have some notes in my papers that mention after market parts that are better than those installed. I also printed the instalation instructions, so that when it happens, I'll get the parts and install them myself. If one goes, I think I'll replace all of them on my 02 at one time. All of this information is on TBN, thanks to members who look out for their fellow Tbirders. Ed

Ed, I had 2 replaced under my Extended Warranty, and when the
next one went out, I replaced all 8, w/plugs, and glad I did.

Maybe it was my trip to the 55th Anniversary in Detroit this past weekend, but I too had a COP problem on my 2005. Brought it in this morning, replaced the bad parts under Ford's Premium extended warranty, paid the $100 deductible, and smiled all the way to the Glass Shop. Why? On I75 between Cincinnati and Dayton I got stoned in Ohio again. One week short of one year ago was the last time I had my windshield cracked between here and Detroit. It's hard to avoid these Dump Trucks when then enter the interstate right in front of you!!! Good news is my insurance comprehensive coverage pays 100% of the approximate $600 expense with no deductible. Whoopee!

Re: Bad coils and only 10,000 miles.

Thanks guys. I called the Ford Customer service hotline. Told the lady about COP. She looked it up, and described it to me the way that the COP threads describe it. Then she put me on hold, called the Ford dealer, and spoke to a woman who handles warranties. I had paid with my debit card. 1 day later, it was back in my account. I didn't even have to go back to the dealer. You guys saved me $454.51. Thanks!!

When I took mine to the dealer with similar problems, all 8 were replaced and the wiper motor had some work done.

My father-in-law gave his '05 to my wife.... he said "It runs great"... I drove it, and it was missing all over the place. I took it to the local Ford dealer.. they replaced all 8.... no charge..... runs fine now.

If they go bad again, will they be covered ?
